Web Design Tips

The overall design of a website can have a huge impact on its performance and reputation. If you use user friendly, aesthetically pleasing design elements, your visitors will be more likely to rate their experience on your website highly. However, if you have a poorly designed website, they will exit the site without giving it a second thought. Use the tips in the following paragraphs to guarantee that your website is attractive and functional.

  1. Choose your fonts carefully. You should only choose fonts that look professional and are easy to read. The most well-designed sites use professional-looking fonts. Stay away form Comic Sans or other fancy looking fonts that are not on every computer. If one of your visitors does not have your chosen font on their own computer, another font is substituted. Sometimes this looks worse, but often times it helps the reader who otherwise may not have been able to read your website clearly.
  2. It is wise to develop a sitemap you can reference for planning purposes. It gives you an overview of exactly what your site's structure is. Now you'll be able to fix areas that need improvement, or add something you've forgotten. Nothing can fully replace a clear, easily interpreted visual.
  3. A good technique to use is to acquire some checklists and cheat sheets, that you can check out any time questions or problems arise about your site. This is also an excellent way to get information on how to make your site better.
  4. Buy books that can help you become a great web designer. Buy books that are appropriate to your skill level. You do want to increase your skill level, but since web design skills build on each other, missing things can be problematic.
  5. While you design your site, remember you don't have to use all the available space on every web page. Using every pixel available to you can make the website feel overwhelming or cluttered. Dividing up your site's elements with blank space, can make it easier for visitors to distinguish what elements perform what function. There are many cases in which empty space is actually more valuable than other content.
  6. Be careful with the placement and execution of audio with your pages. Visitors to your site can get annoyed if they are unable to control or mute sound on your website. Providing links for audio and video are fine, though you need to allow the visitor to have complete control as to whether they want to listen to something on your site.
  7. Speak with people you know just to see if you missed something when you learned things like Dreamweaver, Photoshop or HTML. It's a good thing to know that you actually remember all that you were taught, because something you don't want is to be halfway through designing your site and then suddenly stumble over a lost fact or point.

The success of a website is often determined, not by it's initial traffic, but by how much those visitors use and enjoy the site. When you have a well designed site, traffic can be boosted drastically. Conversely, making poor web design choices will depress your site's traffic and discourage repeat visitors. Use the above web design advice to ensure that your site is infallible.
