Grandma Was Right . . .

It's The Simple Things In Life That Are So Important.
Now that I'm a grandpa myself I understand the importance of good manners.
We teach our children to behave and say thank you and please. But somewhere along the way I forgot to pay attention to these things myself.
I was recently reminded of their importance by someone I am striving to emulate. A marketer that IS where I WANT to be.
It went like this . . .
I purchased a product a few months ago on email marketing. A subject I spend a lot of time studying and testing.
Anyway, I have been receiving emails from this guy for months. I always open his emails because they always get my attention.
They get my attention, not because of some catchy magical subject line, but because I feel like we've made a connection. Even though he doesn't know me from Adam.
He's just got a writing style that I like and is interesting. Not all spammy.
OK, so how did I get from Grandma and good manners to email marketing and my buddy Mark?
It's because the other day we were talking in one of my favorite forums (JVFocus) about developing relationships online. Lasting, mutually beneficial relationships.
The question was how do you break the ice and make contact with some very busy, super successful marketer? You can't just drop to your knees and start begging! Right?
Here's what I did . . .
I received an email from my favorite email guy. It was a very informative email with actionable tips. I hit the reply button (this only works with real people with real businesses).
Guess what I said in this email.
"Hey, I could sure use your help promoting my cool new thing" NO!
How bout this one:
"Hey buddie, you otta promote my new thingamagig. I'll give you 50%!" Double NO!
All I said was:
"Hey Mark,
Thanks for inspiring and informational email.
I have to say . . . your emails are the only ones I NEVER just delete.
They go into a "special" folder.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks.

That's it! No Mas!
Well, do you think he noticed?
Heck Yeah!
He even took the time to write me a note.
"Hey Paul,
I'd like to thank you, sir. That is really flattering as I KNOW how manyemails people get hammered with every day.Means a lot that you'd point this out.
Best,
Mark"
You want to build your business?
You need to get involved with the folks that can help. There's no better way to break the ice then following grandma's timeless advice.
Thanks Grandma!
