Did somebody tell you working with WordPress was easy? ...for beginners!

Website set-up and the Confusion!

Read on to see how I learned the importance of communication, and clarity, and how it caused so much trouble on my first website set up.

Background info:
· what I was doing was setting up a web site using WordPress and I was using a WP design for dummies book to learn how to do this.
· this was the first time I tried to set up a web site, and decided to get help from a friend; but I neglected to tell him I had the WP website files downloaded already.
· I had gone to the c-panel and set up the database and FTP to begin the transfer before I spoke with my friend for help.

Now I created confusion ...and it started now!

My friend told me I didn't have to do all this work of setting up database and FTP; "simply do it from the c-panel". But he was giving me instructions thinking I only had files for a WordPress theme installation; but I had files for a whole WP web site set up with graphics, colors and everything already done.

After we set up WP on my server, from the control-panel, my helper had left to do his own work. I'm left there trying to figure out what went wrong and confusing instructions on which folder to upload the website files. Finally I opened some of the website text files and found instructions including video on how to upload the files through FTP.

Next, I downloaded WinZip to unzip the files from the WSO I purchased with niche pre-designed websites and I'm still not sure I have unzipped the files properly!! On my first attempt to use WinZip I didn’t find the controls to be very straight forward for unzipping files.

Every New tool I open and try to use takes a lot more time to learn than I expected. I'm surprised that certain tools are not a little more user-friendly.

I have not yet watched the videos or completed the file transfer. The next step for me now is to go to the video instructions and learn how to complete the file transfer ... hopefully 'relatively' trouble-free.

I am beginning to see the benefit in finding somebody who already has the skill to do this technical work for my first few campaigns and then use these campaigns to learn how to drive traffic to my offers. When I compile enough data I will be able to begin testing and optimizing my offers.

Meanwhile; I can set up a site on the side to begin practising how to write and edit code, transfer files, design and edit graphics, fonts, color schemes, and to create sales funnels and etc. etc... so much to learn!!

.........................
The way I see it is that it is important for people in the IM industry to understand how it all works together and go through the motions at least a few times; and then begin focusing on whatever specific skills you want to specialize in. Everything else will have to be outsourced if you plan to scale-up the business.

The Warrior Forum has proved to be a great source of information and learning resources. The War Room membership has definitely been a great location to find answers for many questions; including a lot of free info and things like pre-designed websites and such!

Hopefully next post will follow after I have set up the website and used some more skills I am learning.

Till then...
