Back to Work

Checking the forum I see a lot of threads of people who are using it as a blog, to record their progress in their endeavours. I have decided to keep track myself, using this blog instead.

I will use it to record, firstly, my progress with my first website Free Software for Marketing

My original plan was to use this as a one stop shop for tutorials on software like Openoffice, Gimp, Inkscape, Google Sketchup and other little wonders out there that could be used for marketing purposes with the right tweaks and no cost.

I was a bit scared of going through the process of setting up the website from scratch so I hired someone to do it for me instead.

Everything went rather well. The vendor gave me some feedback on what he had done, the current setup and the steps I should take form that point on. He setup some autoblogged content for me to test things and kept the Google sitemap plugin switched off for me to switch it on when I had my content ready.

I started searching for content writers but I shortly got stuck fearing I was going too fast. I stopped ( big mistake).

I left the whole thing running on its own for months. Including a near two month period in which the site wasn´t up because was useless at identifying the problem.

I managed to get it back up and started thinking about what I could do with it. This was about July-August.

I decided I wanted to go through with it, I may as well do something, if only to use it for testing and as a learning curve, except I realised I had gotten into it without learning much to begin with, so I decided to acquire some knowledge.

When I felt ready to start tinkering with WP I hired a graphic designer to do a Nice header for the site. I made a big, big mistake. I had an idea about what I wanted but I decided not to explain it to the designer because I wanted to see if he´d come up with something I wouldn´t have thought of, a sudden spark of brilliance on his part, like reading my mind.

Lesson learnt: The people you hire are not mind readers ( unless you specifically hire one of those). If you want something done you could do worse than giving them at least a brief idea of what you are looking for.

To be absolutely honest I did like what he did, except I would not use it as a main header. I would have had a set ordered to use it as section headers rather than on the main page.

But I digress. I´m now in the process of giving a whole new dimension to the website, with the recent purchase of Market Samurai, which is proving to be worth a lot more than I paid for.
