How much is SEO really worth?
What is your return on advertising?
Do you know the value of a new customer?
What is your conversion rate once you get a new lead? What is your USP? (Unique Selling Proposition)

If you are running a business especially a Bloomington Normal Illinois based business and you do not know the answers to these questions you are leaving major money on the table and most likely spending why too much money on ineffective advertising and not enough money on highly returning advertisements.

The value of SEO can be measured by the value of a new customer X your conversion rate for leads X the number of monthly searches for a keyword X the percentage of traffic based on your sites position in the search results. For example if your average customer spends $1000 over their lifetime with your company and you convert just 1% of your website new visitors to customers and you rank for a keyword that gets 10,000 searches a month and you are number 1 link on the search results and thus get about 45% of the search traffic that position is technically worth (1,000 X .01 X 10,000 X .45) = $ 45,000 a month (4,500 new leads per month). Of course you could just do PPC (Pay Per Click advertising) to be on page one. Let’s say it cost $1 per click you would need to pay for 22,500 clicks ($22,500 a month) to get the same results for this keyword since paid clicks convert 5 times less than organic searches. Of course some of you have noticed that that is not even possible as this keyword only gets 10,000 searches a month and very few of the searchers will even click on an ad. However, it is good to know that the value of SEO in this example would definitely fall within the $22,500 to $45,000 range.

Will you pay $45,000 to have someone do the SEO to get to page 1 of course not you would not even pay $22,500. You just know that it is going to bring in $45,000 of revenue and that it would cost you $22,500 to produce the same revenue if you did not do SEO. You still have to factor in your cost of goods or service. What is your profit on this $45,000in new revenue is it 10%, 20%, 50%, more? Let’s just assume it is 10% or $4,500 a month in profit. If your profit margin is less than 10% you might really look at your pricing and if you really can afford to be in business. A typical SEO campaign will take 6 months to get results for average keywords and could take longer for more highly competitive keywords. There is no magic or trick to SEO. You need to develop great content on a regular basis; you need to be active on industry specific forums, blogs, and of course Facebook, and twitter. This takes time and money.

An average keyword will take 3 to 5 good articles per week for 6 months to start making a difference. An article will cost about 30 minutes to complete once you get the hang of it. Starting out it might take you 1 to 2 hours per article. Let’s assume 1 hour per article and you would then need to spend at least 3 hours but most likely 5 hours each week writing and then publishing the articles. You will also need to spend 5 hours per week on forums and blogs posting comments and questions. Then of course you should be spending another 5 hours per week on Facebook and another 2 hours a week on twitter. There are some other minor tasks as well like ensuring your on page SEO is taken care of, all your links are pointing correctly with good anchor text, etc… Thus, at a minimum I recommend that you spend 30 hours per week for 6 months for every 3-5 keywords that you want to rank on page 1. Once you are there you can drop this down to 15 hours per week, but you should never really stop adding content. So 30 hours X 24 weeks (6 months X 4 weeks) = 720 hours of work even at $10 an hour that is $7,200. I hope you pay yourself more than $10 an hour. How much do you pay yourself an hour is it $30, $50, $150? If you pay yourself $50 an hour (just over $100,000 a year) having you do the SEO work would really cost you $6,000 a month. I hope that you can see that it is much easier to higher an SEO analyst or company to handle this for you. Hiring your own in house analyst or even a freelancer will typically cost you $15 an hour 30hrs X $15 X 4 weeks = $1,800. You may even pay more if you want to get someone that is any good. Hiring a SEO company or consultant though that handles multiple accounts can usually be a better bargain. They can typically handle your SEO for $1000 a month or less depending on your keywords, and amount of work you wish them to perform.
