How do I discern between subscribers and conversions? I.e if a visitor gives me there email address i'll give them a high quality free pdf...Then I'l send them to an offer if they buy they'll go to the same email list as my standard visitor as opposed to a customer list. Im wanting to get a feel for how people work though this. I'm thinking Aweber or similar companies can handle this type of problem easily. However I'm wanting to do the coding myself using basic Html/CSS PHP; my most challenging coding barrier yet. This would save me running costs on email campaigns. Right? #newbie_problems Leave a comment, I'd love to be able to reciprocate. |

Aweber it's; set up a buyers list and about three clicks in automation rules. When someone opts into list B they are unsubscribed from list A.

You can apply a tag to customers, in order to segment them from everyone else. Aweber can do a basic version of this by moving leads onto a separate list, but it's incredibly limited. Nearly every other autoresponder will let you segment and run automations that are based on individual actions, so your campaigns are more targeted and you increase sales. Personally, I would encourage you to use any other autoresponder than Aweber unless you're promoting affiliate offers. |

A few months and their version of tagging is buggy as hell. If you want to segment with Aweber it's more reliable to do it the old way. At least that works. Ask their support about using Behavioral Dynamic Response marketing on their platform and they will tell you it's "coming later on this year"... but they've been saying that for about 3 years. Aweber can't compete with modern autoresponders. |

You're absolutely correct about aweber. It has dropped a long way behind the competitors and I should have changed years ago.....I'm just lazy I suppose. There are add on apps that will help but they are pretty clunky I'm afraid [awpro tools] I doubt aweber will ever catch up now....they are too far behind the game. Can't even do a proper split test on broadcasts nowadays as they removed that ability a while back.

I joined Aweber around 8 years ago and stayed with them probably longer than I should have, due to brand loyalty and hope. A couple of years ago a friend showed me ActiveCampaign, I was blown away and that seed was planted. The final straw was after I tried to set up a 2-step opt-in box, so my visitors could segment themselves the way Thrive Themes does it. Aweber couldn't handle it, without adding subscribers to multiple lists, requiring multiple confirmation emails. I think you're right, they will never catch up, massive shame. They welcome affiliate marketers with open arms, when other autoresponders don't, so I don't see them going anywhere.

rockerjaw, if you want something powerful and you're willing to climb the learning curve, check into Mautic. It's an open source tool for email automation. It's also a free open source software. It has it's own challenges, but might be easier than trying to code something like this yourself. |

A way to have subscribers and buyers be in different lists could be done by adding an extra signup form on the thank you page shown to buyers. You could incentivize them (buyers) to signup to this new list by mentioning that can get updates to the product for example if you plan to also send them updates. You could also propose extra bonuses on top of the updates. At that point you would end up with two lists: list of free pdf subscribers and list of buyers who signed up again to the new form. You would then setup automation in Aweber to remove people who signed to the second list (buyers) from the free guide list. That way the buyers will be in a separate list. I could add that Aweber may be ok until you have a very big list of subscribers. To save on the expenses of a medium size list, you may want to delete people who have unsubscribed (from your aweber account) and those who are not responsive after 3 months of mailing for example. |

Dear Helisell. Thank You for taking the time to reply and leaving your valuable advice. With over12 years experience using Aweber I have to say it must be doing something right. The combined advice from the members are a tipping: I will likely look for another service. John McCabe recommends Mautic an open source tool for email automation. Any thoughts?

Hi rockerjaw, Definitely go with the apps/tools on this buddy. Devote most of your attention and energy to the conversions and optimizing that aspect of email and hand off the other work to other folks. Ryan PS....I am in Opotiki now for a 1 month house sit. Small world! |
