How important are images to a sales page?
Share on:

As the title says, how important are images to the sales page? Even if I have really good copy, do people need images to keep their attention and make them keep reading?

I've got a medium length sales page at the moment, but it's mostly text. I'm wondering if I need more images on it. What do you think?

Images aren't mandatory, but it's nice to have a good hero shot. Also, you need to space things out a bit, especially if it's just text, make sure it isn't a "text block". And, diversify the text with things like Bold/Underline, and of course spaced out headline, sub-heads, bullet points, etc. etc.

The great part about pictures is that you can put your calls to action under a photo as a caption.

Since more people will read your captions than all of your copy, it gives you a great chance to have them read additional calls to action.

The key to images is getting the right ones. The standard girl sitting at a computer terminal is not the right image. Using an info graphic that shows growth potential, with the caption to grow your revenues click here, that is in line with the right one.

It comes down to MATCHING your intent. The theory goes with every element that you place on a page be it navigation images etc, you are DECREASING the overall potential of the page. However, Matching the element to the desired outcome can help.

Needless to say the "right" image is something that can and should be tested! The overall placement of the image is something that can be tested, be it right left higher on the page lower etc.

Getting an understanding of how the eyes move across a page and how images and the like can effect this is I believe to be very important. There are your 3 common page layouts with corresponding eye movement there is the "F Setup" the "Z Setup" and then the "Gutenberg Diagram" Here is a random well written article on the subject:
3 Design Layouts: Gutenberg Diagram, Z-Pattern, And F-Pattern - Vanseo Design

Great copy is better than, poor copy and some images. People have been glued to great copy, without images for decades. Don't get me wrong, images can help but it is the actual copy, that keeps eye balls glued to a page...not fancy images

Images give values. If the images are pro, they will give trust to your customers.

Selective images only.

And never forget : LESS IS MORE.

Depends on what niche.

Health and Fitness... pictures are a must.

Software products on the other hand... people are looking more for the technical aspect -- in which case it's not as necessary.

There is one old saying, but its a great saying :pictures are worth a thousand words" its even true in sales marketing.Adding a perfect graphic picture of your product or of people using them, makes your product more believable.

Hmm..

Pick up some magazines you have lying around.
How many ads can you see without images?

Case closed.

If you use images, they should be relevant. In other words, they should serve a purpose.

Sometimes a photograph, chart, or illustration can clearly and immediately convey information better than words alone. In those cases, you should use an image.

Images also provide "eye relief." They can break up (and add interest to) long blocks of text that might otherwise seem boring or imposing. The right images can make a page look polished and professional.

Finally, captions below images are among the most highly read elements on a sales page (right behind the headline and postscript).

I find product images help conversion for selling digital products. A sleek looking 3d ebook cover captures the attention and convey value in the sense that they have the impression they are getting something physical (even though it's just a plain simple pdf).

Other kinds of images that have an positive impact on conversion would be images that convey emotions conveyed in your sales copy e.g. person pulling his hair in despair in front of computer to convey the frustrations.

Apart from the above, I try to keep images to minimal.
