How Can I Monetize this Site?

Hey guys,

As a labor of love my friend and I built a site dedicated to the life and work of Louis Pasteur. It has become one of the authority sites for historical information, photos, and biographies related to germ theory, bio-chemistry and the life of Pasteur and his colleagues. Both of us are home brewers and were originally going to spin the site into an intellectual brewing team, but the brewing component fell through, except for the old-time brewing recipes:

Louis Pasteur - The Life, Work and History - Microbiology, Chemistry, Fermentation and Beer

I'm not sure of the demographics of our visitors, but I'm guessing 80% is between the age of 14-24 since most of the material on the site is used as reference material for reports, essays and papers by high school and college students. Other visitors include education professionals at universities and members of the scientific community.

I've tried various campaigns that appeal to the younger generation, such as video games, classmates.com, educational leads, etc. Nothing has seemed to work well. I don't want the focus of the site to become revenue and ideally the offers would be seamless with the content.

The site gets about 10,000 unique visits per month. It's built with Joomla.

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

You could rent few back links (less than 10) from your home page to other nice websites of your thematic in demand of ranking, as your site has authority.
Check to moz the DA and PA of your website, then decide the monthly renting price of your back links.
Well it's just an idea !!

My first impression is that you have some good monetization on there with the items being related to Pasteur such as the t-shirts. Other options would be to link to affiliate items on Amazon such as related science/Pasteur books and perhaps brewing equipment and supplies. For me it seems that the Gamefly ad seems out of place on the site but it it appeals to your visitors then ait may help. These are just my first impression ideas

1- subscribe in Amazon Affiliate program and put related scientific products banner
2-put a newsletter subscription box to build a list and use it as a Solo Ad agent
3- use offerinspector.com to see which CPA offer is more aproperiate to your visitors and promote it
4- there is even no shame to promote interrelated niches especially making money on-line because your visitors are not scantest all the time, they have other aspects in their life and ofcourse they would love to make money

Thanks all for your responses. The t-shirts, sweaters, etc. are unique designs and I sell maybe 1-2 a month if any. That produces <$5 per month. I don't want to follow that lead, it's too time consuming to create the designs and not much payout.

I've tried amazon products (books, chemistry kits, etc.) but those have never paid out. Most people are visiting the site solely for the information and aren't necessarily in consumer mode.

I like @2Pat's idea of renting backlinks. The site has had a solid PR4 for several years. I'm not quite sure how to put the offer out there. Would people still be interested in guest posts? How would you go about finding potential buyers?
