Recipes website - Ideas for traffic?

18 replies
Hello,

We are developing a high end domain (CaribbeanFood .com) and we are going to have around a 1000 recipes and photos within the first few weeks. Most of the recipes are just re-writes of whats available for free. We are relying initially on on-page seo optimization to get us ranked for some of these recipes to get at least 10K visitors by the time we have these 1000 recipes in place. Makes sense? More potential unexplored somewhere?

Would really appreciate the input here.

Thanks a lot in advance...

    It shouldn't take you long to rank high if you plan on posting that many recipes.

    Here are other great ways to generate traffic (free and paid)

    1. Create a recipes ebook and upload to Slideshare, Scribd and other document sharing sites.

    2. Create Captivating Headlines that will make people want to click and read your content.

    3. Submit your content to high pr social bookmarking sites (digg,sumbleupon,delicious,fark,folkd,reddit,slash dot)

    4. Share your content on social media sites (Facebook,Twitter,Google plus, Linkedin, Pinterest, Tumblr, Forum Signature, Email your list).

    5. Run Bing and Facebook Ad campaigns

    6. Invest in Solo Ads

    7. Guest Blogging

    8. Build a relationship with other marketers within your niche and ask them to share your content with their followers and you do the same for them.

    9. Submit a press release

    10. Forum Posting (Find recipe forums and post regularly to them with your website URL in the signature)

    11. Blog Commenting

    12. Youtube Marketing

    13. Create Recipe Info-graphics and upload them to Pinterest linking back to your website.

    14. Install the "Pin-It button" plugin on your website so visitors can "pin" images they like.

    I'm sure if you just follow a few of these traffic methods, especially Pinterest and Youtube you will be doing very well.

    Good luck!

      You haven't said a thing about how you are going to monetize your recipe site. In my experience, that is going to be your challenge. Just placing ads on your site is the same model that thousands of other recipe sites have adopted and most of them make a tiny amount of revenue.

      I would also encourage you to do some online research and see how many searches there are for Caribbean food recipes. Since you're simply rehashing other recipes already found online, my guess is there will not be a lot of return viewers after the initial curiosity seekers see what's available.

      When you say "Most of the recipes are just re-writes of whats available for free" it suggests to me that your site is going to struggle to make decent money.

      Good luck in your new business.

      Great stuff though I don't think # 6 is a good idea at all.

    We are planning to do some adsense initially, but our goal is longer term business and not just short sighted to shorter term goals! We can invest few 100s initially with nothing in return, thats normal... however, we will build a strong fan page on facebook and once we reach a larger number of fans, we will be in a position to promote the site in other ways... contests for best recipe and the likes.. this should keep people coming for newer custom made recipes + helps us with list building. Once this is in place , we will keep on building more and more until we reach a larger number of subscribers... then we see what to do with them then

    We are not seeking a fast flipping approach, we will keep investing until the website is at least an alexa 150K, by then we will most probably be in a better position to think of selling or invest heavier for a WorldClass reach!

    Thanks a lot everyone for the feedback so far

      Ads are good, but the real way to make money from a blog is to have clients. Either by providing a service or something of that nature. Having clients bring in way more profits than ads and it potentially can bring you to a six figure website if done right. Be creative and think of how you can get clients and what you can provide.

    Most recipes online are poorly written. Such as:
    Listing ingredients in the order used.
    Being specific. "add a large can of..." 8 oz, 12 oz ???
    Use "T" for tablespoon, "tsp" for teaspoon, be consistent
    Give instructions in proper sequence.

    I'm sure there are more, this is off the top of my head.

    Good luck,

    Hugh

    YOUTUBE!!!

    I have cooked before while trying to read a recipe off my laptop and its not always easy. Why not make quick videos of you cooking some of the recipes. For some of the more unique meals you may be the first person on youtube to actually have a video which gives you the top spot! Once you get a whole channel you can really get traffic to pour right in. Plus once they arrive on there you can get people to browse around for side dishes and other items.

    Youtube is a great idea.

    Also the cooking/recipes niche is really big on Pinterest.

    Besides that forum posting and blog commenting are good ways to communicate with people in your niche.

    Hi auditt05,

    the best advice to raise your traffic and followers is to use Pinterest.

    1. Create an Account (Business Account)
    2. Create at least 10 Boards (Go first and search for the most popular and following Boards in your niche and create some similar Boards - a similar Name and Thumbnail)
    3. Add as many Pictures related to your Board on a daily base
    4. The same with Followers (Go the most popular boards in your niche and follow these Followers too)
    5. Once you have at least 50-100 Pins on all of your boards add your url in the description in every 2nd picture you re-pin - this will redirect to your main website
    6. Rinse and repeat

    Have a nice day
    Allen

  • Auditt05,

    Found below are some of my recommendations. Heads Up -- Long Post!

    STEP 01. Build a subscriber list at the get-go, so you can promote related products to your subscribers in the future. Do this by categorizing and compiling your best recipes and images into a professional-looking downloadable material with an attention-grabbing cover and title. Set this as an opt-in offer, so your visitors can grab it in exchange for their emails. Set your opt-in copy as your landing page / homepage. Of course, for your opt-in copy -- Develop an attention-grabbing headline, a short and sweet description of the benefits that your visitors can get from your opt-in offer, a brief and enticing video (don't set it in autoplay) that highlights the main benefits provided by your opt-in offer, and an effective message that will compel your visitors to download your opt-in offer in exchange for their emails. To generate ideas for compelling headlines, enticing descriptions and so on -- Consult the headlines, descriptions and content of the cover stories and feature articles of top selling offline niche magazines;

    STEP 02. Continue to promote in Facebook and in Bing your opt-in offer to people who have already visited your website but have yet to download your opt-in offer, so you can effectively grow your subscriber list. Do this by integrating Facebook retargeting code and Bing remarketing code into your opt-in copy and also into the other pages of your website;

    STEP 03. Create a Youtube channel. Post the video of your opt-in copy, and place in the description a link that points to your opt-in copy. Develop video content for heavily searched recipes. Post it in Youtube. Look for related trending, popular and top viewed Youtube videos. Take note of the tags of those videos, and use it as tags for your videos, in order to increase the chances of your videos to be included in the sidebar related video list of those trending, popular and top viewed videos. Also embed your video content to your associated recipe posts;

    STEP 04. Implement effective onsite SEO. Integrate your target main exact match keywords into your site categories, your target secondary exact match keywords into your site sub categories, and your target longtail exact match keywords into the titles of your recipe posts (without negatively affecting the attention-grabbing and compelling attributes of your post titles for human readers). Also use relevant target keywords as alt text attributes of your images / photos, and integrate relevant target keywords in the descriptions of your videos and main content (without negatively affecting the enticing and compelling attributes of your descriptions and main content);

    STEP 05. Integrate social sharing buttons, links and RSS subscription options into the pages of your website, in order for readers to have a quick and easy time in sharing your content and feeds;

    STEP 06. Establish a brandable presence in relevant social networks. Set up pages, profiles and accounts in social networks like Facebook, Twitter, etc. Share your opt-in copy and onsite content in these social networks. Also set up your opt-in copy as the landing tab of your Facebook page for first time visitors;

    STEP 07. Submit and syndicate your content and videos to popular, heavily trafficked content syndication sites and repositories. For example, there are popular, heavily trafficked tutorial / guide sites, and some of these may have categories that are relevant to your niche;

    STEP 08. Participate in popular, heavily trafficked authority sites, blogs, Web forums and social networks that are laterally and directly relevant to your niches. Your objective should be to establish a friendly reputation across those online places as a helpful niche expert;

    STEP 09. Reach out to the owners and Webmasters of those online places for possible guest posting, content syndication, advert and ad banner placements, mailing list ad placement, strategic business and affiliate partnership oppurtunities. Since you'd most likely be a familiar name by the time you contact them because of your participation in the relatd discussions on their sites -- They'd probably be more responsive to your offers; and

    STEP 10. Advertise your opt-in offer in online and offline places that are heavily trafficked by your target viewers. These include social networks, search engines (search and display network advertising), niche Web forums, online and offline magazines, authority sites and blogs, PR distribution outlets and so on...

    Hope this helps. Cheers!
