You need to use the folder name and password you assigned when you added it. This allows the ftp to be locked to that folder.

CPanel wont work w/ that info though.

Addon domain means you're 'adding' new domain into existing domain.

Yes it's work just like you're adding a subdomain

For example, if your main domain is domainA.com, you adding new domain to it, let say domainB.com, it will work like this:

domainA.com/domainB

It depends on your control panel. The DirectAdmin panel handles sub domains a lot better than most of the others. Not that I'm an expert, DA is the only one I've ever used, but that was from reading Web Hosting Talk - The largest, most influential web hosting community on the Internet and it seems true from the add on domain comments here.

Both of those options do not dig up a page with the DA panel. the question came up in another thread and I checked it out pretty thoroughly trying to understand what the guy was talking about.

I do have to log in through the original site, then click on domains and select the one I want to work on, so about 2 extra clicks are involved. It actually works really well.

A subdomain is a subdomain and an addon domain is an addon domain....

If you are simply ADDING a domain to your account you can still access all the files through the file manager in cpanel...same thing with email accounts and anything else that you might want to do with that add on domain. It doesn't have anything to do with the original domain that you had when you signed up for your hosting account other than your username and password for your entire hosting account is the first domain name and password.

If you sell the addon domain you can simply transfer the domain through domain manager and then transfer the files.

If you sell your FIRST domain then you will need to back up your stuff, get in touch with your hosting company and they will make one of your other domains your main domain...they can also advise you on how to back up and restore your stuff.

An example would be....I get into this IM stuff and buy a domain called lotsamoney.com ....that is my first domain. I set up my hosting account through bluehost or hostgator and my login is that domain name and a strong password.

I then get into a niche and buy a domain called ilovefurbies.com. I add this to my account. It is an add on domain...it shows up under public_html in the file manager in cpanel as a seperate folder...I can add email addresses and such to either of these domains.

I can also add SUB domains to each of these domains such as marketing.lotsamoney.com and even one called savetoby.ilovefurbies.com and those will be seperate folders under public_html in the file manager in cpanel....

Get it? the cpanel allows me to administer all of my domains...permissions,...files...folders...email accounts...add blogs and all sorts of nifty stuff. With bluehost I think you can have unlimited domains and bandwidth these days....

I hope I'm clear...you don't have to put one domain name in front of another or anything weird like that...it's a seperate folder on that server with a .html or .asp file inside of that folder...that's all....purdy simple once you get the hang of it. I know that it can be confusing though

OK, I'll pm you my main site and an add on domain and see if it works for you. I'm not actually trying to argue. It would be interesting if you can get it to work because I couldn't.

Add on domain will look like this:

domain.com
domain2.com
domain3.com

and subdomains will look like this

subdomain.domain1.com
subdomain2.domain2.com

I think you got it right! I use addon domains and I log in through my main account in ftp and from there I just go to the domain I want. I have 30 sites in there and its no problem. You can also log into the one domain with ftp if you want.

Well I do not have the site up as a sub-domain so I know it functions on the front end just fine. I type in http://www.mynewdomain.com and it takes me right to that site.

The problems I am having is that without having its own root directory, a lot of my SEO, sitemaps and other little tricks are not working. If it were just the site itself like this, that would be fine but I gotta promote it to make money. I am going to try to repoint it to its own folder and if that does not work, I will hope that their tech support has responded by then. LOL

This is sort of an old thread but another one reminded me of basically unfinished business here.

I pmed Garrie my main domain and an add on domain in my DA control panel, and he could not get the sub domain arrangement to work. It just won't with DirectAdmin.

First there is no directory or tree structure. All your domains, primary and add ons, are in the same folder in alphabetical order.

If you want you can even change the default domain in 2 easy steps. The first takes 3 single clicks. One on domain admin, one to select the domain you want to be your default domain, and one to save the changes.

The second step does take a bit longer. You want to wipe off the sweat, pour a double brandy, and take a break before your next big job.

The only advantage to changing the default domain is that you get to the files and folders a couple of clicks sooner. I do this routinely when work on a new site gets busy. Suddenly my newest domain is the default domain.

An add-on domain is technically a subdomain.

If your "parent" or original domain name is "xyzprinting.com" and you add on "abcscreening.com" you could access your website through abcscreening.xyzprinting.com OR abcscreening.com -- thus making it technically a subdomain.

However, depending on your hosting, you can FTP it directly without going through the "parent" domain. Some hosting companies let you, some do not.

I'm with hostgator, and they let you, but i prefer to use the parent domain name, and navigate to the addon.

If you would like to login with a separate cPanel, then you would need a reseller account as someone else indicated earlier.
