Methods to get recurring revenue as a web designer

Hi. I am a web designer that has been building websites for small business clients for years and I have heard that many web designers charge monthly fees for maintenance. What exactly are you doing maintenance on? I do charge a yearly fee for website hosting and I have some of my clients that pay a small monthly fee or monthly website updates time.

Except for SEO services what else can I offer clients on a monthly basis to get recurring revenue? I do not know how to manage PPC campaigns. I am willing to learn but for now I am wondering what different web designers offer for services for a monthly fee? Thanks!

    Hi,
you could offer to gain visitors by uploading short videos to Youtube and then submitting on Social sharing sites such as Facebook and Twitter etc.

You can often outsource this on Fiverr.com for good results and amazing profits.

Your clients will see the extra traffic coming in and make more money keeping them happy and you will have a great extra revenue stream.

Once you have clients who like your work you can provide services like this and make a good extra income.

You could ask them what they would like - that is always one of the most effective ways to find out what your clients will pay for without you wasting time and effort.

    Hope this helps.

I am not sure about monthly fees per se but my developer just does a kick butt job on high profile blogs then gets referral clients and profits from the awesome job he does, and also, by nailing down work with high profile bloggers. Keeps monthly revenue coming in and bigger ticket revenue at that.

Thank you for your replies. These are great ideas.

Ged. The videos you mentioned do you mean like slideshow type short videos or videos of the client talking about services?

Igotmine. You mention social media posting. What do you post on social media for them?

Ryan. I definitely agree that doing a great job gets the referrals coming in. I get a lot of my business from referrals and repeat work for clients. I do not know how to get high profile clients nor do I know if I would want the headaches associated with the really large projects. I am not saying I am afraid of it or am unwilling to do the work. I am just not ready to take on projects more than $5000.00 or so right now. Most of the websites I build are in the $500.00 - $5000.00 range with most of that being in the lower end of that range.

Become a reseller and let someone else worry about that:

Yes slide shows are vey quick to produce and can be very effective. That is the sort that I use all of the time. If you have a client talking about the service recommending it - that will be even more effective - you could contact clients to see if they would agree.

I charge a maintenance fee to clients who can't or don't want to make changes like adding images or moving a nav menu link.

Sometimes it is a monthly fee or a pay as you go fee depending on the amount of work being requested.

I'll even write an article or two depending on the client and niche involved.

An example is a new client who was referred to me with a previously built wordpress site that wasn't mobile friendly.

I created a new responsive child theme and added some content which they liked and now they pay me a monthly maintenance fee to add content to the site because they don't have the time.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Ged that makes sense with the slideshow type videos. I saw someone on youtube making one like that and it seemed pretty easy to do. Paul thank you for the feedback. I do indeed do monthly updates plans for clients that need lots of updates throughout the year. I do not enjoy copywriting so I have not started offering that service yet but maybe I can outsource that. Thanks!
