which ftp to download?

My computer is powered by Windows and my hosting is Linux?
So, which version of FTP do I download: Windows or Linux?

Sorry, for the stupid question.

The one that runs on your desktop computer. Many servers run Linux, its great for running servers. But if your personal computer is windows, get that version, it should run just fine.

An FTP software by nature talks to any remote FTP system. That's the wholepoint of a protocol (FTP, HTTP, SMTP, etc).

But 'your' FTP program must be able to run on our machine. So you must download a Windows version of the FTP program for your Windows PC.

I have been using FileZilla for many years. It is free and very stable, no problems. There's also a free FileZilla FTP server if ever you need one.

SmartFTP is more feature rich but it now requires a fee after the 30 day trial. But I will probably be switching to it at some poitn.

There are many more FTP programs available. You have plenty of choice.

    Good luck

    Hi

I used Smart and also Filezilla. Until Hostgator support told me that
Core FTP is very stable and works great. So I tested it and never had
any errors or problems. Just another darn great FTP program.

Actually Daniel raises a good point. I too had problems with HostGator + FileZilla ... wasted an awful lot of my time trying to figure if the account settings were wrong.

But CoreFTP was just fine with HostGator. Otherwise FileZilla has been rock solid everywhere else for many years. I guess the issue must be at HostGator.
