I was 'forced' here... Oh, could have gone the SSDI route, but that just doesn't sit right with me. Not as talented as CDarkLock, but hope to get a living income before having to to resort to something else.. whatever that is. Lol. I do OK, but bills are much too high. (my own fault). So I have to do more right now than I am really able to. Yet, all in all...
If anything has come out of my car accident that is positive, it is the opportunities I have found on-line to be my own boss and this forum. Otherwise, never would have occurred to me to not do what I was doing. (I love adrenaline). Lol

Though I'm still doing my college, yes I get a lot of strange looks whenever I tell my career is going to be based on internet marketing blogging and virtual real estate. They seem puzzled mostly because they feel it's not worth a penny I guess.

That didn't work out as planned. I wrote the book, yes. It sold a few copies but I didn't retire. I couldn't retire!

6 months ago, left the corporate world and am now my own boss!

When I tell people what I do - blogging and internet marketing, people look at me strange! Do others get strange looks?

Sounds a bit like me!

When Microsoft did their big round of layoffs six months ago, I was one of the people who ended up leaving... and after a couple weeks, I said "screw it, I'm not going back to work for anyone else." And then I came here.

Come to think of it, that was six months ago today. I need to do something special for that.

First- Congrats to you!

When I was young I was working a part-time inventory job. There was a guy working with me (mid 40's) that had a full-time IT job. He was also going to night school to get a Masters degree.

His IT company was paying for his degree but he was required to get the degree in order to keep his job.

This guy worked one and a half jobs and was going to school. Now I respect hard work I could not shake the thought that this guy would be forced to get a PHD in ten years to keep his job. The IT job could not have paid very well if he needed to count inventory at 3AM to pay his bills.

Congratulations! I always get inspired when I hear stories like this. You're also right about how many people will regard you as odd because they just don't 'get' it...this is the reason why there are far more people working at jobs than blazing new trails as an entrepreneur!

I know it had to be hard in the beginning, and you probably had to deal with self-doubt and a nagging spouse and/or family, but I think the rewards are entirely worth it. To be in control of your day and not have to answer to a boss is absolutely priceless, in my opinion. Of course, the icing on the cake is the income that far exceeds the notorious J.O.B.....lol!

Welcome to WF!

Every time someone asks me what I do I give a different answer:

- I make sites (direct and fast answer)
- I'm a marketing manager (to public administration)
- I'm the boss (funny answer to closest friends

)
- I'm my customer's success (to potential clients)

and so on!

It's great, funny and we are in the correct way!

And we have a lot more motives to do the strange looks to all the 9-5 employees:

- What?! Don't you like traffic (car traffic)? I love traffic! Traffic means money.
- So you had a crazy week, ah? 45 hours working? WOW! Me too... but it were 60 hours of pleasure (most of it).
- You don't like your boss, do you? I love him!
etc, etc, etc

"Forgive them father, they don't know what they are doing / missing!"

Ok... not everyone has / want to be an entrepreneur but current and future world is an entrepreneur world (I hope it stays like that for long time).

@ adamsad My story might be a bit boring but I'll share bits which may be interesting as I write more here

@ EnlightenedWarrior I suppose it did take courage. But I had my exit plan - just didn't think it would take 3 years. The biggest thing was giving up the regular monthly cheque!

@ hotftuna At the last company I worked (which was a great company) you could chose to complete a degree if you wish - all paid for. But it wasn't mandatory. A good friend of mine is doing a degree at his company. He can't get promotion without it. That's sad!

@ Travis72802 A publisher? That sounds quite cool!

@ paulie888 I don't know if it was naive but I never suffered from self doubt. I always knew it would work out eventually. In my mind, "it had to". It did take much longer that I anticipated though. I worked most evenings and weekends. Plus my wife gives me full support and one of the reasons why I love her! I'm not earning at much as the employee job but working when I want, how I want is priceless. In fact, I was offered a contract job just the other day - $800 a day! That's good money. I said "No thanks". Don't get me wrong that's more than I'm making blogging etc, but I couldn't go back in a high powered, stressed job - unless it was $2k a day! lol!

And for everyone who wants to quit their day job and do 'whatever we do' for their living - have a plan, work out how much you need to live on and add 50%, persevere, work hard and do it!
