Have we evolved to become too dependent on subscriptions?

Netflix. Spotify. Microsoft 365. Disney+. Practically almost every online service has become a subscription.

But have we become too dependent on subscriptions? I mean, some providers have forced them and practically gave us no choice. What if I just want a one-time fee and have perpetual access?

Chime in.

Corporate greed is the reason for all of these subscriptions.

Years ago, I used to provide an online app for enhancing photos automatically and was charging users $10/month.
Some people used my app a few times only in the first couple of day, but was billed every 30 days for many months. Easy money for me when people forget to cancel or just got lazy. But some people do get angry once they found out about the monthly charges and requested refunds.

Anyways, I no longer have this app and prefer not to sell subscriptions. But I can see how greed can easily make one go this route.

Nowadays I provide online apps and tools for free with ad-support.

*I'm not saying all subscriptions are bad such as web hosting services, energy utilities, etc.

"Energy utilities" are not subscriptions - they are 'services' we pay to use.

This thread title was a reach when it was posted.

This is just IMO, but on an internet marketing forum such as this,
the discussion should be about subscriptions as a business model,
where we charge clients monthly/recurring/membership fees for
    various things that we provide.

    Not whether we have Netflix.
