What is the best first way to drive traffic?

If you could expand on your question...we may be able to answer this for you. This is too broad of a question to really answer it effectively.

What are you trying to promote? Is it your site? You don't have to tell us everything, but you could give us an idea of what you are doing. Promoting a clickbank product to convert to sales is going to be different than promoting a Youtube video. The type of traffic visiting your site makes a big difference in the conversion rates.

  I am promoting an ebook. I am in the process of getting it approved for clickbank. Right now I am getting very little traffic to the site. There seems to be a million ways to drive traffic. I guess I am looking for a logical place to start from cheapest and easiest (i am not a techie) to more expensive and complex. Hope this is clearer.

ezinearticles is always my first stop. Once you get a good quality article then you will see some instant traffic.

If you want to pay for it, then head over to google adwords and get all the instant traffic you can handle.

get your site index on search engine (google, bing, yahoo, alavista, etc) . It's the first step...

There are thousands of way to drive traffic but not all of them work. I suggest you pick a method and use it for at least 20 days, the you evaluate the results.

Remember to track, this way you can know where your traffic is coming from and how it is converting.

SEO is the best way of getting targeted traffic, which means you need backlinks. However, this may take a while before you actually get to see any real organic traffic. If you want instant traffic try forum marketing, twitter and ezine article. You probably wont get alot, but its free traffic.
