Here is an article that I ran across. It is fairly long, but it is a great read. It is by Eric Graham.

Dude, it seems like I was having this discussion with my Mom at lunch the otherday.

I somewhat disagree with the notion that higher education isn't geared towards entrepreneurship. To me, the math and physics give students the confidence that they can learn anything and everything, from manual labor to quantum physics.

The intro felt kinda hypey to me though
Okay... I'll warn you up front, this post LOOOOONG and is going to piss some people off! I'll be touching on the "big 3", Money, Politics, and even Religion!

But I'm fine with that, because the people it's going to piss off are not in my target market anyway!
He could've just started. Or maybe I'm just tired and cranky...

Good points, although I'd say that the value of higher education goes way beyond learning a particular discipline or career. I think that a college-age person gains a profound advantage by spending four years at a university living, socializing and developing alongside people from various backgrounds. But as for the need to stick with a "JOB" for the next 50 years of life, I agree with most of what he says. It's sad and surprising to see all of the people losing their jobs in this economy and simply not having any of the tools or intuition to do something else (and more worthwhile)...

Great blog post by Eric. He is definitely right in his statement that the majority of college education is geared towards employment opportunities. That being said, there are the 'intangibles' that one picks up in college that come from overcoming challenges and developing a lifetime learning habit that will be valuable regardless of whether we choose to work for an employer or not. I do agree wholeheartedly with him about how people are systematically being brainwashed into thinking that a job is the solution that leads to the Great American Dream, nothing could be further from the truth. People need to understand that businesses are ultimately run for profit, and this means that when you're working for someone else you're inevitably paid far less than that you're worth to them in terms of profit; the only way to get paid what you're worth is to run your own business.
