WARNING If You Downloaded Artisteer...

I was just running my Sunday deep scan, and my a-squared free software lit up with a Trojan warning.

The name of the file is Trojan-Banker.Win32.Banbra.cjg!A2 and it was attached to file ArtisteerInstall.exe.

If you downloaded this software, you need to check it ASAP!

Where did you download it from? Artisteer don't provide their downloads with that particular naming convention.

I've never had a problem when downloading Artisteer and have uploaded many templates without any problems.

Well today I heard from a client that I made a theme for using Artisteer (and our own header graphics) and she can't get into her WP dashboard because there is an error and its reports a Trojan.

I have changed her theme back to original and contacted Artisteer support and also left feedback on their website in the hope to get in touch and see what is going on.

Anyone know how else we can get in touch to report this problem?

By the way, I downloaded Artisteer 2 directly from the email sent from them to upgrade.

I have also scanned the theme again today and still nothing reported, which is weird.

Someone mentioned checking for "false positives" can anyone explain that please and how we Go about it?

      Thanks guys

A false positive is when a virus scanner wrongly states that there is a virus. In this case I would guess that is what has happened as no one else seems to be reporting it. Either that or a virus which the OP obtained some other way has attached or embedded itself into artisteer.

Try scanning it with a few different solutions and seeing if more than one gives a virus warning, if not then it may well be a false positive.

Just wanted to update people on my situation in this thread, in case, people search for this in the future, or are search about Artisteer.

In my clients situation it was NOTHING to do with Artisteer (her host is now removing the offending hackers files) and in fact, although I contacted Artisteer orignally over this to cover all bases, Paul Hudson of Artisteer was in fact extremely helpful to me even though he didn't have to be. So as far as I am concerned, Artisteer is safe and still rocks!!

Thanks for all the help guys

Folks, take a look at the date on my original post - 6 months ago.

At the time, Artisteer was apparently still in beta, and I downloaded it after following a link from someone I trusted here on the Warrior Forum.

I suppose it is possible that trojan attached itself after downloading, but I scan regularly and run software to detect this kind of thing coming in. I found the trojan by scanning the executable prior to running it.

I'm not blaming Artisteer for anything, nor am I accusing them of anything. At the time, the thread with the link was fairly popular, so when I had a problem, I posted about it. I was careful to specify the name of the file I downloaded, so people could take their own precautions.

Given the defense here, and apparent lack of other problems, it appears the problem I had was transient and no longer an issue.

If it was so then you think with the thousands of users there would be a lot more on the search engine about it and doing a search there is virtually nothing.

To get a virus like this does not necessarily mean that it came with the software but that it attached to the software once on your computer.

I will do more research but at the moment there is little to support the claim.

    Hi -

False positive. There a quite a few programs that use code similar to what could be classified as a trojan or other malicious code. That's one reason spyware and anti-virus software wants you to only have one on your computer at a time. They may try to quarantine each other. lol Even portions on microsoft software could show a false positive. I used to use a code editor that would always show up on scans but it wasn't a problem. It had an extensive java script library and that's what the anti-v software didn't like. It doesn't mean there is one. Some of the anti-virus/spyware software (often the free stuff) doesn't differentiate between the two.

So need to know what your putting in Quarantine or Deleting I know first hand. Also if you use one of these popular free anti-v programs and you quarantine something it might not put the file back where it came from if you release it from quarantine. That happened to me. It quarantined multiple paths and separate files and it took 2 months to figure out where all the files and folders belonged. Some of the free programs aren't set up to tell the difference but the better paid ones are. I found out the hard way But I learned a lot
