Hey all.

I know to many, exit popups are annoying but I was wondering if any of you have success using them to generate leads and/or sales? I have a site where I am promoting a service via CPA and wondered if a popup on exit might be a good idea.

    Hi Scott,
I havently personally tested them but I know tons of marketers who have and they are experiencing success with them Also, when I loo for a CB product to promote I make sure it has an exitpop up. The stuff works!

I'm using Acionpopup, and it's easy to use plugin for Wordpress. Can also be used outside Wordpress.

I would say see my sig but I would probably get told off for it ...so I won't

Like many tools, especially controversial ones like this (and article spinners etc etc) the rule is...they work best when you use them with a bit of thought & intellegence. Some sites are more suitable for this than others.

Think about what you want from those exiting visitors. Maybe, on a new site, an exit poll with a free gift would be better than a basic opt-in so you can ask questions about your site or content in order to tweak it to stop these people leaving without taking action.

Bottom line is, you worked and paid for the traffic. 10 minutes after they leave they have mostly forgotten your site completely (experiment..write down the last 15 sites you visited in order, then look in your history). If you just retain 1% as potential customers, its worth it IMO.

And the software is free btw

I figure the potential customer is not going
to bite right now anyway. So my exit pops as you refer to them
usually lead to an optin page and a free gift.
    Seems to work well.
    Maybe they will buy later.
The fish may not bite now but it's still in the pond.

As a customer, I hate when they pop up too many times . If you have one that pops up with a free gift, that would be pleasing because it shows that you value their decision and want them to come back later. I am avoiding some guys now because I know I have to go through grief just to see their product. I won't use them for a hard sell...I think in the long run, they will hurt more than help.

This is what I have in mind, I hate it when you're trying to leave a site that either doesn't float your boat, or you just can't afford the product, only to go through 5 or 6 exit pops and find out the product they wanted you to buy for $197 "can now be yours for this ridiculous, I'm slitting my own throat, and putting my kids out on the street price of just $7"

How can you trust anyone that was going to stiff you for the additional $190 if you'd bought first time round!

However, (sorry for the mini rant there) my reason for wanting to use one is purely to offer the potential customer a choice at a separate product, if the first wasn't to their liking.

Which (eventually) brings me to my question, does anyone know of a free or cheap script I could use is said customer was to leave my squeeze page (so no wordpress plugins please), to offer them something else?

      Any help always appreciated

Even if they work short term, what's the long term
branding damage? I would consider using them if I
were employing paid traffic methods and risk losing
people forever if they don't sign up.

But for anything else? No way.

I abandoned using all of that stuff. Everyone who has ever said that they worked never showed any proof and they are highly annoying.

Personally, I have found that good sales copy gets subscribers every time...popups just annoy them and look amateur...just my opinion.

I have an exit pop on one of my websites that converts 20% of the people that are leaving my website into paying customers.

      That is huge!

Using an exit pop has probably been one of the best things I've done for my business in a while.

But, you need to know how to use them smart way.

A disturbing trend that is going on in this market is that people will offer an instant $10 discount for the people that are leaving their websites. This is extremely shortsighted and what I call "desperation marketing".

Now, if you want to offer a discount for a lesser version of the original product that is fine. But these people are actually just giving a $10 discount just for leaving.

This is doing damage to their business. Here's a perfect example of why... You develop loyal fans that will buy whatever you put out. How do you think those fans are going to feel when they go to your website and buy your product because they feel that the value you are asking for the product is worth it, and then, they find out all they needed to do is not trust you and leave your site and they could have gotten a $10 discount? Do you think those loyal fans are going to go straight to your website and purchase your next offer? No. They are going to go to your website click close and see if they can get a discount for doing so.

Remember, using an exit pop is an amazing way to increase conversions for sales and for leads. But, you need to do it the right way.

My point exactly... Well apart from the $180 difference

But I'd still like some kind of inexpensive exit script (not wordpress plugin) to offer anyone leaving, the choice of opting in to my mailing list or viewing some other offer. If anyone can help?

Some marketers say they work, but I have never used them.... I find them annoying sometimes when I need to get off a sales page. Anyway, you could install it for sometime and test what results you get.

Test it. I never have and probably never will because I like to run my business the way I prefer to shop. Is that smart? Probably not. I don't care. I do things in my business the way I prefer. Period. And I don't care for exit popups as a shopper, so I don't use them in my business. Isn't that one of the big reasons we all started our own online business - so we could call the shots? So go with what you like to see as a customer yourself. Or, if making the bucks is really your only concern, then test your bottom line with and without the exit pop. Let the $ determine your actions. It's your business!

This product is not free, I think it's $59.95, but it looks really interesting. I intend to take a close look at it myself as well as attempting to find unbiased reviews.......anyway, here's the link: Popup Generator, Hover Ad Creator and Pop up Generator

I'm not using popups presently, but I want to generate an exit popup only for the purpose of giving away a free product and building my list. So I am going to really investigate this tool.

      P.S. There's a free trial.
