A Few *Newb* Questions

I have some newb questions since i only started IM a few days ago, hopefully some of you experts will know the answer too.

Firstly, I have a .co.uk domain is it possible for my keyword domain to rank high in google.com or will it just rank high in google.co.uk?

Secondly, my site does not seem to have http://www. in the address but only http:// and then my site. Is this a bad thing and will it affect my seo or does it not really matter?

Thirdly, Backlinks... confuse me some what, when creating backlinks should i be giving the url to my site and then useing the keyword that's in my url? and does posting my link on any site give me a backlink? (Sorry if im missing the point)

Thank you.

It's safest to stick with a .com for broad appeal, but if it's your first site don't worry about it. Stick with what you've got as this will probably be a learning experience. Don't be disheartened if it doesn't make you any money because the what you learn will be worth more than any money you get out of it.

You should be able to get to your site with or without the www. I don't use www at all these days in my linking. Some other SEO experts might have more to say on the issue but I would say don't get caught up in the small details - just do it and see what happens!

When you create links, mix up your anchor text a bit. Rotate between a few different keywords and the occasional word like 'Click Here' - You want it to look natural. Send 75% of the links to the main index page and the other 25% to various content pages.

Phew! Hope that helps a bit. Keep reading and keep trying things out!

    1) No
    2) No, that's fine, you can reconfigure this using .htacass if you wish.
    3) Generally yes, but you use keywords you want to rank for, but your domain-keyword is usually a good place to start.

.co.uk is still a top level domain... some countries just have the .co or .com before the country extension (like Australia has .com.au and NZ has .co.nz).

It's not the same as having a subdomain!

As for the www or not... if you type Welcome-Sedo.co.uk it should still say www unless there is a .htaccess file telling it not to (personally, I like it without the www, but some like it with...) If you google .htaccess you should be able to find a template for setting one up so that your site always has the www if you like.

You've gotten good answers so far, the only thing I would add is it doesn't matter with or without www, just make sure you stick with one or the other with your backlinks.

I believe (if things havent changed) that if you have a .co.uk address but its HOSTED on a non-UK host like bluehost, host gator etc, then your site will rank for both google.com and also the country specific google results.

I agree with Aith about the backlinks.

Make sure your anchor text (the text that people actually click on to get to your site) is a keyword you want to rank for. Don't use the same keyword over and over again; make sure you change it up.

Again, like Aith said, make sure the backlinks you are building go to your main page (index page, home page, whatever you want to call it) and also the subpages within your site. This helps to get your main domain, i.e. www dot mysite dot com, ranked in the search engines, but also helps your inner or subpages get ranked too.

Another tip is to make sure you get your site indexed (if it isn't already) before you start building a lot of backlinks.

      Peace & Blessings,

      Ayesha
