What information would I need to make changes on somebody elses web site?

This is probably an incredibly stupid question but I have never made changes to somebody elses web site before.

Please could somebody tell me what information I would require from them to make the changes (I have their permission of course )

Many thanks

Gary

You need their FTP details so you can communicate with
    their server from your computer.

Specifically, you want their hostname, username and password.

The hostname will be something like ftp.example.com

Then use a HTML editor or FTP program to 'get' the relevant
pages, make your changes and then 'put' the updates pages
    back on the server.

I use Dreamweaver for client sites and Filezilla for uploading
    scripts etc.

    I hope that helps.

    Hello Gary,

If they are running Wordpress or a similar content management system all you need is access to the administrator panel. Ask them the URL, username, and password.

If you are simply uploading or downloading files to/from the site you'll need to ask for their FTP address, username, and password.

If you're installing a script or software of some kind you'll also need access to their webhosts control panel in order to manipulate databases, cron jobs, emails, etc. Just ask them for their cPanel or control panel username, password, and access address.

Thanks very much Shaun and Gr Marketing

I had everything but hostname which he doesn't know as his designer is not answering his calls.

Let's hope he gets in touch with him soon.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

If you have the FTP username and FTP password, then
the FTP hostname will likely be ftp.example.com or
www . example . com (no spaces). Just use your
client's domain name instead of example.com.

Let's hope the designer plays ball and gives you the
details. I also hope that your client owns the domain
        too and not the designer.

That is very helpful. Thank you so much.

          So I have these details:

          Username: xxxxadmin
          Password: xxxxxxxx
          Domain: xxxxx.co.uk

If I enter the info ftp.xxxxx.co.uk and enter the username and password it should work?

I use ALFTP but will look at filezilla because that seems to be the ftp of choice for most people.

It took me forever just to learn the ALFTP program

          Thanks again

          Gary

PS. Istvan, I just saw your post. Thank you very much!

Assuming that your client has given you their FTP username
and FTP password, the the hostname variations should work.

However, your client could have given you the username
and password for something else such as their hosting account
            or cpanel.

(It's not uncommon for clients to get confused on their details
and some of them don't know the details at all!).

But if it's the FTP username and password you have, then
try ftp.example.com first and if try the www variation.

Good luck. If you need a hand, PM me.

Thank you VERY much. You have been incredibly helpful.

I think that you have provided me with enough information so that I will be unlikely to have to bother you or take up any more of your valuable time but I appreciate the offer very much. It was very generous of you.

              Thanks again

              Very best wishes

Usually, the default FTP account on a cPanel has the same user/pw combo as for the site admin login

    re: hostname

On most hosts you can put in filezilla just example.com (no www!!!) and it should work.
