vBulletin Version: Do You Think I Should Upgrade?

I have vBulletin 3.6.8 Patch Level 2 unused (finally now ready to use on a project). My license has expired so if I wish to upgrade I need to purchase another license, but don't know if it's worth it. What do you think I should do vBulletin warriors?

I've tried to find the differences between 3.6 and 3.8, but cannot. Also, getting a license would give me access to all 4.* versions.

Seeing it's a fresh site, now would be the time to go version 4 to save me the problems of upgrading and updating files.

Can someone post some good resources here comparing version 3.8.6 to 4. It's all unclear and contains a lot of controversy! I've decided to upgrade, just trying to choose between the two.

Can't comment of vBulletin specifically, but in general you would be well advised to use the latest version of software such as this as any known security problems should have been patched. Using old versions can lead to "hacked" sites as many WordPress users know.

Using the latest version will make your site more secure, will save you upgrading issues and will make your site live more longer because v3 will reach end of support before v4

I would look at alternative forum software (as I'm doing at the moment). I own 5 vbulletin licenses and operate the forum sites. I really don't like the look of the new 4.0 and there seem to be a lot of problems with it (for the people who've switched).

I noticed some of the biggest vbulletin sites are switching to IPB or other software. I haven't had time to do enough research yet but am probably not going to pay the support fees this year and look for something else.

Let me know if you decide to stay or switch.

I'm not upgrading until they sort out the bugs.. version 4 doesn't look ready for release, in my opinion.

vBulletin 4 is in version 4.0.5 after several release candidates and it's still not stable?!?! Jelsoft is collapsing.

Using a different software script isn't an option for me because vBulletin is compatiable with several other key scripts I use.

I think I'll upgrade to v4 (forum option) shortly.

Yes you should upgrade the vBuliton version to newer version. Always upgrade the your forum with new version because new versions come with lot of facilities and with new features.I hope this will help you.

I don't know what to say about vbulletin 4. To many people are having problems with it. If you go to the vb site you'll see complaints right and left. After some research I find out that vbulletin is now part of a new company, a lot of the developers have left and hence all the problems.

That's why I decided to go with IP Board . I don't have any sites on vbulletin so I can't comment on that but when it comes to IP board I would recommend it to everyone. Easy of use, functionality, security, pretty much anything you want is already in there.

I've found the same alexbbbh. Version 4 is still too unstable and now it's up to 4.0.7. I ended upgrading to 3.8.6 because of v4's instability, I'd have to pay for a new brand removal license at a cost of $150 (stupid!), and v4 is incompatible with a piece of software (Delavo) I need to use. Easy choice after discovering this.
