There is risk naturally but if you create a new FTP id that may help. To do good seo you need to change on page factors hence the need for site access. Alternately ask him for the changes and have your web person do them or do them yourself if technically inclined.

    Absolutely, but make backups first...

Most SEO people will not be able to do their work, if you do not grant access to them...

If you trust the guy to give him your money, why would you not trust him inside your admin panel?

For every project that you will need to outsource offshore, an agreement is very important, specially the confidentiality of the project.

You would only need to do this if you are working with on page SEO, with off page SEO there is no need to have access to your Cpanel or anything like that.

SEO is really just having fresh content, having some activity on your site and backlinks.

Yep, have done it. If I trust them and they need to dink around with plugins / scripts / whatever. Fine. As long as I don't have to do it.

Make sure you have backups made before you give your access information to anyone.

And you can also give constricted FTP account, so he would only have the access to specific folders, not the entire server.
