Things I've Learned in Internet Marketing

Although relatively new in this field, I have found some things I have done wrong and wanted to share them as it might help others just getting started.

1. Buying a niche adwords site from someone that is a new site and has no traffic history or search engine ranking.
I'll admit I got a little bit taken on a site that I bought for a few hundred dollars. The seller seems to be a good guy so I'm not going to say anything bad about him, all I can say is he writes good copy and has a great sales pitch. And I am a bit of a sucker.

Lesson Learned: Make sure you know what to look for and how to validate claims of how targeted the keywords are.
Alternative Lesson Learned: Don't expect to be able to do thorough research of a site for sale on an iPhone... while riding the bus...

2. Outsourcing SEO work without clear direction.
Yes, been there done that. I got ahead of myself and thought I could gain some keen insight on what someone who knew what they were doing would do to rank a site in Google. Where I went wrong here is the niche I was targeting was just really poorly researched (by yours truly). I didn't spend a lot of money but I think due to my excitement got a little carried away. Good news is that I do have a spreadsheet with 30-50 link building submission sites. (Which I could have found for free, but the premade spreadsheet has got to be worth a couple bucks)

Lessons Learned: Three Blind Mice?

3. Throwing Good Money after Bad.
Self Explanatory. If you've seen some of my other posts on here I like to advocate taking the Bull by the Horns and just get something going, see where it leads and what needs to be refined a bit. I definitely employed that philosophy and have spent too much money on stuff that didn't pan out. I'm not saying they won't eventually but I now think there is a level of competence you must reach to really justify spending money to improve your business.

Lesson Learned: Try to do as much as humanly possible for free when you get started. You shouldn't be "re-investing" in your online business until you at least have the cost of your monthly hosting paying for itself. Someone else wrote that somewhere and it's really good advice.

I hope that someone finds this helpful in their journey to internet marketing fame and fortune, I know I've learned a lot.
