What's the best balance of pitch v. tip in mailing to subscribers?

Any thoughts on the ratio of pitches to free gifts in a weekly mail out via your autoresponder?

I tend to get tired of people pitching and nothing but. Equally I get tired of 'Thank you, your download's ready' or words to that effect. Predictability is a killer - for me, at any rate.

I aim for 1 pitch for every 3 gifts/tips?

And then we have swaps. How many of those do we fit in to the pitch/gift output?

Asking for too many optins of you subscriber can exhaust him/her.

And does an aggressive output work better than the more cautious approach? Some convincing rationale would help everyone.

  • This all depends so much on your list and what works within your style.

For instance, I've heard a lot recently that short emails, with little but a link, are the most profitable overall.

I pitch something in every email, or I at least presell something that will be in a follow up email. But, there's a strict rule. Pitching exactly one thing per email, never any more. I also like to integrate the pitch within interesting content. No tricky headlines. I like to have a good relationship with the people who are willing to take their time to read my messages and be on my list.

That works for me. Of course, other people's mileage may vary.

My tendency is to make 'free gifts', i.e. actual downloads, random surprises. I don't want a list of people who only stick around because they know I'm going to hand them another freebie in another message or two.

My aim is to make the content valuable in its own right. I'll add a soft pitch for either something related and useful, or a reminder of a deal I've offered recently (especially if there's a time limit). The pitch may just be a link to a blog post or article, but I want people in the habit of clicking links I send them.

I try to average 3-4 value messages per hard pitch, but I don't really keep track.

The only pattern I want people to see is that when I send something, it's good stuff (whatever it is) and that I have their best interests in mind.
