Anyone got any suggestions on the best and most customizable premium (or not) WP Themes

That's a really general question. Do you mind being a little more specific? Because there are plenty of highly customizable business themes, minimalist themes, blog themes, portfolio themes, corporate themes, etc. that are fantastic.

I like Thesis a lot because it's really customizable, and in its most basic form is kind of like a blank slate where you can make it become any kind of site you want it to be...in other words, very chameleon-like!

Thesis is definitely one of the most customizable ones I know. Like paulie888 said it's more like a framework that you can easily build your own stuff on top of.

That said, highly customizable themes can be a real resource hog. Every option it gives you needs to be stored in the database and even though settings don't change once you got your site up, every page request now requires WP to make so many more database lookups to read the current settings and to do the processing to apply them. It can really slow down your site if you get a lot of traffic.

So, with a highly customizable theme, do not forget to install a caching plugin. Or what I often do, I hard-code the things that never change right into the template files.

the problem with Thesis is it is not newbie-friendly and everybody's using it..hohum...boring!

I always recommend the free themes from WordPress.org...you can't get your theme listed on WordPress.org without adhering to WordPress's guidelines.
So you know that any theme you download from WordPress.org will work properly.

My personal favorite is Graphene...I've been able to create some nifty child themes for it.

I use the Socrates theme...it's premium...but not as expensive as Thesis.

It's very customizable...easy to use (even for beginners). You can set up a basic blog or website in about 5 mins. It is made for WordPress. You can make squeeze pages and sales letters with this theme also.

Wordpress has a new default theme, can't remember what it is called, that is actually very versatile. I like it a lot.

Last time I used WP it was the default theme installed as soon as you install WP.

I think you mean the WP Twenty Ten theme. Yes, this is amazingly useful out of the box, and is far more flexible and visually interesting than the previous WP default theme!

There are many free premium themes out there, but I usually search for min. 30 minutes to find the most suitable one for my actual project.. It's hard to share the best because it highly depends on the site and on your mind which will you like
