I am looking to explore classified ads as a means to drive traffic and also looking for affiliates. Is it useful or is it a waste of time? Thanks!

For $20, I would run a test. Things you may want to look at

1. What are the most viewed or replies to thread?
2. Notice the heading, wording, special characters?
3. Depending on the purpose of your ad, it's like a sales letter disguised cleverly as classified ad.

  Yes classifieds works for generating traffic but classifieds needs to be posted on Geo based locations. There are numerous sites which provides free posting of a classifieds but for a certain time limit.

few years ago I have use ebay classifieds. I think it cost me around $30 to $40 to make it featured and manage to get over 70 optins. I didn't make any money at the time, but I was new to IM, and the freebie I gave away was junk. Though I'm not sure how ebay classifieds will work nowadays.

  I think that success with classified ads depend greatly on your offer and the target the classified ad publisher aims.
  
  You can try online and offline posting.
  
  I have tried them and as mentioned before, it depends on the offer and the targeted market of the ad provider.
  
  Of course, check out the honesty of the ad provider.
  
  For example: There is an ad source that promotes 24,000 + members on 10 sites. Each site has some 2K - 3k members. What you don't know is that in reality they have only some 5k members, because most members repeat in each site.
  
  And subscribers is one thing and readership is another. If printed issues, printed issues is one thing and readership is another. Do they sell all their printing?
