What do YOU look for in a Webhosting Provider?

Hi there,

This is nothing more than to gather information from the public. I am currently wondering what you warriors look for in a Webhosting Provider? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Jake

Live support.. That's essential. If I have trouble with my server, I don't want to submit a ticket and wait days for a response. So, live chat/support or at least VERY prompt service is a must.

    Good luck with your research!

If you are new to hosting, you will do better asking opinions of which hosting is best for your circumstances. Problem with comparing - is you may be comparing the wrong things initially.

I've used Hostgator (good prices, good support, good tutorials) for years - many here use it - and there are other hosting options recommend in threads here as well.

It actually doesn't take much to be considered a 'difficult woman' -
that's why there are so many of us.

        Hi Kay King,

I currently operate a Webhosting Company. This thread was created just to find out what you warriors are after when searching for a Webhosting Provider.

Thanks for all of your contributions,
        Jake

Downtime is not acceptable. We have hardware in place to protect us from DDOS attacks. We also use KSplice in order to stop server reboots after updates.

This has been noted. We currently have been averaging 2 hour window ticket responses.

Reliability - down time should be very, very rare.

Quick (and knowledgeable) support - doesn't have to be live, just very quick. It really helps to have people who know more than I do providing my service.

Reasonable cost - There is a whole lot more to hosting than dollars per month.

How to guides that are easily searchable - you can add videos if you want to for people unfamiliar with your hosting service, but there is really no excuse for not having comprehensive FAQ's, etc.

Good support, email is fine as long as it is fast.
Affordable - not cheap, just affordable.
    Good uptime and reliability.

Common sense - had a site hosted by a company that I'd been with for around 4 years, knew the owner by name. One of my sites had a hiccup with its automatic backups, and started taking up more than my allocated disk space. Instead of suspending the account, which is what is said would happen in the terms and conditions, he emailed me and waited for a response. I was out, and it was about 3 hours before I could reply. In that time, they had deleted the account, sent me a wad of zip files and told me to go elsewhere. I'm sure there could have been a better way of handling this.

Sorry about your story! That company acted in such a way that seems inappropriate on so many different levels.

      Thank you for your input.

Great tech support, cheap price, or shall I say reasonable prices, and is has to be reliable of course. This is what I look for.
