I need a Netbook - any recommendations?

I'm looking for a mini laptop / netbook small enough to slip into a handbag so I can use it out and about in coffee bars etc, also not too heavy.

Maybe one of the Dell Minis 8" versions - or are the screens too small to be practical? Something with XP would be good.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chrissie

      Hi Chrissie.

We just bought our daughter an Advent 4211 Netbook for her Christmas present.

I'm a Mac guy through and through, so initially I looked at the Acer Aspire One Linux model, but then I figured that you can't really get away from Windows when working at school and she'd need something compatible with MS Office.

So, we went for the Advent. I've been tinkering around with it to make sure it's all set up for Christmas day, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed.

It's extremely light and compact, comes with XP Home pre-loaded, wireless, bluetooth, and the screen is very bright and clear. Our only reservation was that it didn't have a CD-ROM drive. However, the chap in the shop explained that if we went for a proper laptop around the same price, then they come loaded with Vista, and that needs a lot of horsepower to run properly. The XP Netbook is very quick and responsive when doing basic tasks such as browsing, email, MS Office.

It didn't come in pink unfortunately (unlike the Acer model), so I'll have to get a pink carry case for it! My 7-year old daughter is a pink kinda girl!

I would check out the eeeuser.com forums. The Samsung Nc-10 gets the best reviews from what I've read due to its 6-8 hour battery life, then comes the Msi Wind(Advent 4211 is a rebranded Msi Wind) in 2nd place, then the Asus 1000H & 1000HA models. All of those have 10" screens. The acer aspire one is a decent built netbook as well, but has a 8.9" screen which some find too small.
