How I created my own personal ad network

I've been setting up a new site and originally my plan was to use Google Adsense extensively. I'm still using AdSense, but it occurred to me that a single click with Adsense provides a dollar or two, while a single affiliate sale provides potentially a lot more.

Of course, I can make ads for an affiliate product, but one of the strengths of an ad network is that the ads are different on each page. If someone looks through 10 pages of my content and the same ad is in the same place on each page, they'll mentally blur it out after a couple pages.

Now, I'm a bit of a newb, so I don't have a lot of sophisticated tools. But I worked out a strategy and implemented it last night. Here it is:
  • Go to Clickbank and find 16-20 products that are in this niche.
  • Use my ghetto Photoshop skills to create a 125x125 ad for each product. They are SUPER simple...for example, one product is a guide to starting a photography business. I simply married a camera icon with a "Photography Careers" text. Doing all the ads took about 2 hours. VERY simple PS and you could certainly do this in a far less professional product.
  • Write some Javascript to produce a random ad. I got a little fancier and made it make sure no ad was repeated.
  • Insert that JS into my ad widgets and voila, instant ad network.
You can see my efforts at findPDXjobs.com - the four ads on the right are all from my "personal ad network" and change on each page. Clicking on any of them will take you to the clickbank affiliate (and untold riches for me! LOL)

(The site is still being built so it's thin content-wise, AdBrite is not running yet, etc. - I'm just posting it as an example of a "personal ad network").
