It's the Economy, Stupid!
At any rate, though some warriors might have bank accounts bursting at the seams, for a lot of people out there in the "real world", times are tough. People are struggling to pay bills, jobs are hard to find and more and more people are looking for opportunities online.
A lot of people are behind the 8-ball.
Nobody ever likes to get ripped off, but, when you've got a regular paycheck coming and you've got plenty of credit available on your credit cards, heck, it might not be worth bothering with complaining about a $7 product here or there that was disappointing. Heck, a $37 is a trifle too. Time is better spent earning more money than worrying about $7 or $37 here or there. Coffee or dinner could be that much.
But, when you're struggling, when you don't have that paycheck coming in, or when it's smaller than it used to be, and you're stretching and saving every little penny you can, that $7 is a lot of money. That's a meal. That's money you cannot afford to waste.
So, it becomes more worthwhile to complain, especially if you don't have a job and have nothing much else to do.
And, so people complain more.
And more complaints go to government agencies.
And more politicians get involved in wanting to remedy that.
And more regulations come or are rumored to come.
And, rather than face that, some companies (PayPal, YouTube, etc.) will consider "make money" niches riskier and might rather cut them rather than attract more attention to themselves and face increased scrutiny or regulations.
The bottom line is that people are complaining more. And some are taking proactive measures to reduce their risks in dealing with potentially troublesome industries.
So, things that people may have let slide when the economy was booming aren't going to let that stuff slide anymore.
And that's what I think is going on these days. PayPal, YouTube, etc. aren't "out to get" anyone. They're reducing their own risks. Cleaning up their own nests. And so on.
Of course, some innocent players are going to be caught in the middle. I suppose that's the risk of hanging out with a pack of wolves. Sometimes, the bullets are going to hit the labrador retriever tagging along.
