I'm a big fan of number 4 & 5 I guess. Personally I like to use the first email to make a more personal connection with my mailing list, and do what I can to get them connected to the places I want to engage (i.e. Facebook , twitter ,YouTube, SU, The blog, etc.) Then I start with content emails only sending out 1 or 2 promotions a month.

For me the most important thing is actually getting my new list members conditioned to actually opening my messages and expecting value, also I only send out a blast once or twice a week when I have something good.

I figure by getting the members who want to connect more with me to do so via social media I can engage them in multiple way whenever I want without feeling guilty.

      Cheers.

Can you elaborate on your 'blasts', are these affiliate promos which you find on affiliate directories, even the warrior forum?

and what is the rough % of buyers, from that blast to that list, who actually purchased that blast promo ?

My own method works for me. I give my subs a mix of good quality content mixed in with related product/service info and pitches.

For my list, it's closest to your option #3.

EVERY email 'sells' something - covertly, overtly, or blatantly.

EVERY email delivers value - in one way or another.

EVERY email will NOT delight, satisfy, or even be tolerated by EVERY subscriber.

The ultimate determinant of whether or not it 'works' is the numbers I crunch
    after hitting the SEND button.

Those help me decide whether or not to change something.

In a cute, trite, over-used (yet under-utilized) phrase:

    TEST IT!

    All success

...Value, Value, Value, Value, Promo, Value, Value, Value, Value, Promo....

Keep them listening and keep them buying...

This is what works for me

Mine is sort of a hybrid...

Each email focuses around a want/need/desire/problem that the prospect is experiencing, and positions the product as the solution. But I don't go rushing into a sales pitch. I build a relationship through stories, etc, then slowly transition into a soft sell. Links are very specifically placed for maximum click-throughs.

Works like gangbusters for me and my clients.
