International Mirror Sites

Calling out to all IM experts,

Total newbie daft question here:

I set up a site with a .com domain which I have hosted with Dreamhost. I've built links to it and it's currently on page 1 Google.com. However, my market is strictly regional so I need traffic from the UK. At the moment the site is not ranking at all on google.co.uk!

If I set up the same domain name but at .co.uk how do I transfer the backlinks/link juice/anchor texts etc that have all been built up on my .com site so that google recognises the site in google.co.uk.

I have the option to set it up as a mirror site with my hosting company of I can redirect from .com to .co.uk but will any of this effect the SEO work that I've spent so long doing.

Yes, I do know now that I should have registered the correct domain before any of this but I just need to know what the effects will be of transferring the whole .com site to .co.uk.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Bodders71

People usually talk about using a 301 redirect to send traffic for the old domain to the new one. Preserving backlink seo benefit may not happen.

Apparently one of the many ranking factors Google examines is the geographical location of the host, using G.B. hosting company might help a tinsey winsey bit.

depending on how much effort has gone into link building and the kind of rankings and traffic you are getting from the .com domain you can choose to do one of the following

    1) if the links / ranks/ traffic is not very significant then the obvious choice would be to put a co.uk domain

    2) if the links / ranks / traffic is significant and if there isn't a lot of heavy hitters in the uk market then build some backlinks from uk specific domains to your .com domain

    3) you can also create yourdomain.com/uk and designate that URL as your uk site in google webmaster tools, and its possible you will get to pass some of the .com link juice to your uk version
