Timing for Popups , slide ins, pop overs, etc.

Has anyone tested the timing of a popup? I find it personally bothersome when I get to a page and the first thing that happens is a popup. I've yet had a chance to read anything.

Personal discomfort aside however I'm wondering if anyone has actually tested the timing of a popup.

    Hello Scott

I tested this at the end of last summer, and wrote some code to do it.

I set things up so that the visitor would get my popup (unblockable) after they had been on the site for either:

    5 seconds
    15 seconds
    30 seconds
    45 seconds

It worked this way even if they switched to a different page on the site.

A timing was selected randomly from the above list for each visitor.

I found that the shortest times (5 and 15 seconds) pulled the most by far.

    Cheers,

    Neil

Thanks for that info Niel.. I suspected getting it popped fast might pull better even though I don't really like that when I'm a visitor.

This is probably one of these cases where the average punter isn't as affected by these things as much as those of us who see a million popups a day.
