Internet Marketing Predictions for 2012 New Year Anyone?

Ready or not here are my top 3 Internet Marketing changes, shifts and trends that will happen in 2012. I have more but I'll go with these 3 and leave the rest to others.

You'll see ...

... 1. More video marketing ... less long form sales letters.
... 2. Tougher Google restrictions on Internet Marketers.
... 3. Less Google love for Affiliate Marketers.

My opinion, what's yours?

I predict people will continue asking for legal advice in marketing forums and they will also ask if the money is really in the "list". We will also see fewer questions about article marketing since newer "fads" like Fiverr, Unthink, and <insert next fad here> will abound.

Also, Mike Lantz's and Allen Says's coffers will continue to grow as more and more WSOs will be sold than ever before and more people will use WSO pro (disclaimer: the Warrior Forum has nothing to do with WSO Pro as WSO Pro is a totally separate 3rd party product / service).

Kidding aside........there will be an even bigger, explosive growth of apps in 2012 compared to 2011. Market places will continue to put controls in place to help weed out spam. And lastly, despite what some people have written, e-mail marketing, Facebook marketing, and internet marketing are NOT going to die.

I also predict that my coffee machine will continue to crank out massive amounts of coffee!

    1. I think the written word will always have a prominent place. You can skim a sales letter. Not as true with a video (especially those with no controls to pause/skip).

    2. I would say that depends on what you do and how you do it. People looking for the quick easy bucks use the "quick and easy" methods. They always get slapped down, regardless of what business they are in and where they conduct it.

    3. I didn't know that Google was in love with affiliate marketers. They have been vehemently stating that they are monogamous with their user base. Has Google been cheating ?

What do I expect in 2012? More of the same. It's been a very long time since the basic principles of marketing have changed. Algorithm changes, Terms of Service and all of that other crap has no effect on the business trying to deliver quality to their users in the first place. Those that actually care about their customers (and not a quick buck) rarely if ever cross those lines anyways.

@Rod, you forgot "Death of" threads.

    1) an explosion of consciousness,

    2) an explosion of people helping others out

    3) an explosion of information sharing, (this will be encouraged by mobile phones) so if others recommend your stuff to others then you can get more exposure. just make sure you provide value, so they will want to promote you.

    Prediction:

More focus on mobile devices (ipad, droid etc.), Google coming out with its own "droid" in 2012...i see about 20% - 25% of site visitors coming from mobile devices..which is about the percentage of people using chrome.

This also means that the market is going to change in that direction with more and more people surfing "mobile".

Hum the following to "The 12 Days of Christmas"....

1 - More of Google search results dedicated to paid ads
2 - More weeding out of duplicate content
3 - More reward for content that is significantly different to the standard article format
4 - More devaluing of sites with links in bad neighborhoods
5 - An absolute system of determining algorithmically whether there's a natural correlation between backlinks and site activity (a new system of 'velocity' is needed for the new system of PR).
6 - A new system of Page Rank - a merging of external authority links with on-page content, with influences coming from social media and varied media formats
7 - Further expansion and market share for high authority websites (think Amazon etc)
8 - Less prominence for affiliation websites
    9 - Major integration of search/user profiling
10 - Major upgrade in the integration of eCommerce websites in organic search results based on user search profiling
11 - Facebook roll out a search product that integrates web-wide search on your FB wall. The results will use friend data and show what your friends have been searching for and buying etc. Google's market share will fall 22% overnight.
12 - A more 'in your face' attitude from Google in its efforts to implement crackdowns on content/activity that is not conducive to improving its bottom line (this will be forced upon Google based on the erosion of its market share by new Facebook search products).

Interesting take on number 3 rooze. So, what differences do you think Google will reward for content that's different to standard article formats in the coming year? Any thoughts?

Since I have no knack for predicting anything, I'll just go with these...

    1) WordPress will upgrade to 3.whatever. Maybe even 4.0
    2) There will be at least a 25 brand spanking new "the death of" threads on the WF, but none of those things doomed to croak will actually, you know, die
    3) After coming up with a couple predictions, some people will struggle to get to a third prediction
    4) I will finally learn that a "droid" does not refer to that pasty skinned person on Star Trek - The Next Generation
    5) There will be no apocalyptic doom in 2012, either in IM or otherwise, but there will be no shortage of "doom and gloom" prognostications, a few of which might actually come true

I think it's hard for anyone to predict with any 'real' accuracy as hings can change at the drop of a hat. People are banging on about mobile media etc but I'm we'll have to see about that. I think that video is on the up and as we all know.. video can be extremely powerful and has so many uses such as product reviews, testimonials, sales videos, training videos etc. Video is defintely one to focus on.

Other than that I see 2012 evolving just like any other year...

    1. Article marketing will be dead
    2. Video and mobile marketing will take over
    3. QR codes will be the Next Big Thing
    4. Google will slap and delist perfectly good websites for no reason
    5. PayPal will freeze and hold funds for no reason
    6. Some guru or other will release a total game-changer

You know, exactly like 2010 and 2011.

It's what I said when my friend Nicole Dean asked for my thoughts
to share on her blog about what will change in online business in
          2012.

Y'know that age-old quote... the more things change, the more they
          stay the same!

That's my prediction for 2012 - online business in the years ahead
will go back to the way it was in 1996 and thereabouts.

A focus on quality content that provides information, entertainment
          and value.

Products and services that were created to solve a problem and
not just to make a quick buck.

Emphasis on relationship building to gain and retain attention than
simply spraying promotions at anonymous audiences.

To those who entered online business around 2004, these things
might seem 'new' - and a return to those tactics a 'change'.

          All success

            .......................
Well, I actually agree with him on the point he's making, but I was making a completely different point. That doesn't mean there still won't be an explosion of more apps next year and that is what the OP was asking, predictions for 2012, not beyond that. Dave Winer talks about apps not replacing the web and I never wrote that apps would replace the web, I only stated that apps are going to continue to grow. In his article he mentions he's going to stay on the web because he doesn't believe apps have staying power; that's a strong possibility because apps, in their current state, are pretty simple and are capable of so much more.

I think apps are going to abound in the next 5 to 10 years, the sale of mobile devices in the millions is driving this. The thing with apps is that they do have their limitations in their current form. I look at my own iPhone and I have a Kindle app, Amazon app, Paypal App, Dragon Naturally Speaking app, etc. and would prefer to have one interface instead of having to click on each app when I need to use it. I also think apps compliment the web well, especially with more and more mobile devices being sold every single day, but they are like "silos" as mentioned in the article. On that point, I agree.

I'm on the board of one company right now that is working on a killer web-based interface that takes collaboration to a whole new level that just received some significant VC funding. Will it succeed? Who knows, but it's definitely a view of what's to come. And there are many other companies that are working on similar projects. I know because we get bi-weekly presentations on what they're up to. It's pretty mind-boggling on what's coming up in 2012 and beyond. I still believe the Internet, in terms of what can be done from an efficiency standpoint, is still in it's infancy.

I think someone is going to come up with an app for apps (or something similar) where collaboration is going to connect the web and apps like nothing that's out there today. And it's going to be a HUGE game-changer for IMers and entrepreneurs alike.

I'm just dying to see who comes up with it first. Google's made a couple attempts at something like this but it never made it past the alpha stage. But really, this is something that is not easy to predict.

I personally don't think apps are going to rule the web anytime soon, however there are some facts you simply cannot ignore: millions of mobile devices are being sold every week worldwide. Apps in both app stores are continuing to grow. So at least for the immediate future (5-10 years), apps are here to stay.

Irrelevant at this point because that's not the point you or I were making. Their active user base has grown and that, in and of itself, will lead to more advertising dollars. Your prediction was that Google Plus would be "a faded, bad memory" in 2012 and I was simply stating that the sheer numbers don't support that conclusion. That's all.

As advertising costs continue to grow above inflation, new affiliate marketers will struggle to join the game. Some may say they've now missed the boat altogether. Google will finally perfect Panda, thus will make it almost impossible for you to do mass marketing SEO. You either build quality branded sites or you don't bother at all.

Facebook IPO's and loses at least 25% of it's value within the first 3 months, amongst fears of a new and growing social media bubble.

Information marketing will become increasing more difficult, the gap between freely available information that people share for free and that those charge for shortens even more.

A declining global economy and increasing competition and advertising costs force more new start ups into bankruptcy.

    Just some harsh truth.

The U.S. Federal Government will step up to the plate and start taxing Internet sales on behalf of all U.S. State Governments.

How to collect and disseminate those tax funds remains the only sticking point at this time in my mind, but the Feds will solve the problem in 2012, and fix it so that we will be responsible for collecting taxes on online commerce across all 50 states.

Say it aint so. Hopefully, they'll find ways to drag their feet, like they normally do for other things.

I predict that more people will wake up to the fact that NO government ANYWHERE will "save" them from the current economy. More people will understand that the only "no risk" is having your own business.

    Personal predictions aka goals:

    - LASIK surgery to get rid of these darn glasses (fall 2012).
    - A trip to Japan to see Kevin Riley and see if moving there is a good idea (Fall 2012).
    - Be in REPS magazine (Summer 2012)
    - Start Ninpo training again (Feb 2012).

Mostly though: To live my life with respect for everyone but not to be held down by ANYONE.

I predict a step toward the inevitable draconian intervention which is to come eventually. Leave it to the govt. to assert themselves as the 'all-knowing' when all they really know is usurpation.
