HELP--- Problem with Gotowebinar practice recording of the .wmv file

After recording the practice webinar, I played the .wmv file and it had a bad background noise as well as it seemed to "fast forward" during certain parts of the recording (really annoying).

My questions are 2 fold:

1) Is this normal for the practice recordings to be all messed up?
2) Am I correct in saying that you need to convert r the .wmv recording to a .flv file to play correctly? Do you have to convert the .wmv file or what about other file types? Why file is it best to convert to?

Thanks Guys,

Chris Negro

    Hi Chris,

I think I can only answer the "background noise" part.

During recording, the microphone will pick up all the sound wave, including your sound as well as the background noise. If your environment is noisy, the result will be noisy too.

If possible, find a room (or studio) that has little background noise.

Also, remember not to put the microphone too near to your mouth, as it can pick up the saliva noise.

Do you suggest a certain microphone as I'm still using those logitec headsets that video gamers use. Thought this microphone would still suffice but perhaps I need to upgrade.

      Thoughts?

        Hi Chris,
I don't have any specific recommendations for the microphone.

I am not sure if this can apply to your webinar. (I'm new to webinar as well)
When I did an audio recording some time ago, I did not use my normal microphone... my computer is too noisy. Instead, I use my iPod in a quiet room. There is a recording function in the iPod. Then after that, I transferred the audio files to my computer.

It might help to download the GoToWebinar Codec:

This is an area where I am not so strong.

My understanding is that the Codec is basically a translation software that allows your operating system to better understand how to interpret the data in the recording.

I do know that a number of people actually have issues hearing, seeing and editing the GoToWebinar recordings, and most people once they have installed the Codec no longer experience those problems.

Maybe someone who is more geeky about software than I will be able to offer a better explanation.

Also the codec can not be edited with Camtasia and can not be converting with a dozen different converters that I tried - the best I could muster was upside down and backwards (I think it's actually still up at YouTube, lol)...

But how I get around this is I use the record option within GTW but afterwords I play the recording on my screen and use Screencast-O-Matic - Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing. pro version (records beta) to record the screen while it plays... Just be sure to mute your mic so as not to pick up an extra noise...

This allows me to edit it and convert it to a format that I can upload to YouTube.

    Hope this helps...

    Cheers,
    Coby

    Hi Chris,

1 - The codec is just some code which is optimised for recording for the specific audio and video characteristics that GTW uses. Because it knows what to expect, it usually does a better job of making the recordings smoother and more playable.

2 - "Background noise" can come from many places - including from the mechanics of the computer you're using. I've found in the past that if I do recordings of calls on my laptop, if the laptop has already been running for several hours the noise of the fan starts to introduce noise into any audio recordings I do. If I make the recordings when the laptop has only been on for a short time, or I do it on one of my desktop machines - I don't get the noise.

    nothing to see here.

Found the problem.... GTW said that the noise was because I was doing the webinar from a WIFI connection in my home. They said that your internet connection needs to be HARDWIRED directly to the desktop or laptop.

After doing another test run with being 'hard wired". It definitely is better....HOWEVER... there is a "raspy noise" with my voice. I've converted the .wmv file to .flv file and still there is a problem.

P.S. I want the replay video to sound TOP NOTCH...which is why I want the sound quality to be at a high level. You don't hear the replay videos (from other top marketers) sounding like this.....AND THERE MUST be a reason why.

    Thoughts?

A better microphone will help. My recommendation is to take a look at the "Blue Microphone's Yeti USB Microphone". You can find it at Amazon for a good price. Consider getting a pop filter with it and you'll be sounding like your favorite talk radio host.

Then why on earth would the GoToWebinar Professional recommend the headsets used by traditional gamers (e.g. the $40 ones at Walmart by Logitech or the $200 one by plantonics)? He specifically said..these are the ones that GTW recommends as they keep the background noise low because the noise from the speakers (e.g. Gotowebinar talking assistant ect...) go DIRECTLY to the headset ...and hence never gets recorded when you listen to the replay.

I'm all fine with getting a new microphone...I just wish they can be more specific when addressing these issues. If this is all the issue is.....then you would think the Tech Professional would just go ahead and diagnose this properly.

        Thoughts?

The file produced by the GoToWebinar platform
DOES have some extra code that makes it impossible
to edit in most video editing software that I've
    used.

You need to convert the file to a different format
first, and I don't pretend to undertand all of
    the techie stuff.

Here's how I do it on my Windoz machine:

You can use Windows Media File Editor.
    Open the wmv file.
Then use "Move the Scripts to Header"
Now you are able to edit the file using a
    program like Camtasia without problems.

When you "edit' the file in Camtasia, what do you do next? Is there a feature in Camtasia to get rid of this "rasping/small echo noise" ?

I just never hear the replay quality (from top marketers I respect) ti be that like of the ones I'm hearing from the .wmv file that GoToWebinar produces (even after converting it to another file type like .flv).

      Thanks Willie,
