Do Game Strategies Work For IM?

After being online for over two years I had an insightful moment the other day. I was playing B Jeweled and realized that game strategies are very similar to Internet Marketing strategies.

I have always thought that our plans should include goals that are not necessarily tied to money. For example, if we want to earn a certain amount of money each month then we know that we have to have a plan that will get us to that point. Our plan must include steps.

The plan will likely include building a website or blog. Other steps might be finding or creating appropriate products to promote. Then the promotion must begin. Each of these steps can be broken down into smaller steps.

The goal in B Jeweled is to generate a high score - this is done by making the right moves. As I play the game I do not focus on the score, instead I am focused on completing moves that will create a high score. I am busy scanning the board for strategic moves that will help me reach my ultimate goal of a high score.

There are various levels in the game. Some levels take longer and may even seem more difficult than others but it is impossible to skip any of them. So when a level seems difficult my only focus is to stay in the game. Staying in the game becomes my only goal because it means survival. And by staying in the game my score is increasing.

When a level is completed I then take a quick glance to see what my score is.

I am suggesting that the focus on making the right move and staying in the game is more important than the score itself. Why? Because if I make the right moves and stay in the game my score WILL increase.

I believe this is true of Internet Marketing - keeping a focus on the little steps each day will result in the achievement of the ultimate monetary goals. Having a plan in place and strategies designed to help you reach your goals will definitely make the road to success quicker and less painful.

Great post! And great game you're playing, I've spent a ton of hours with it myself :°)

I think the analogy between how to win a game and how to win the "marketing" game
is very pertinent. Not only in Bejeweled but in other games as well before you win you
must go through a number of other steps... I play a lot (right now I'm playing Call of
Duty World at War) and in all games you can't "just win", exactly like online you can't
just make x thousand dollars because you want to.

Like you said there are steps to follow: I can't win Call of Duty without going through
the various stages the game presents. There are shortcuts that can be taken, just like
in marketing, but they won't always yield the highest score you could achieve.

You can cheat, but it's usually a short term solution and if you play online you will be
excluded by most other players, again reducing the score you could achieve following
    the rules...

Considering the complexities that online promotion has reached in the past few years,
braking down your plan to achieve a goal in small steps is probably by far the best,
or most productive at least, approach one could take.

If you try to do all at once you'll probably just mess up things and fail, while if you
follow a well laid plan, with lots of smaller steps and focus on the correct and
succesful implementation of those steps the WINNING moment will get closer and closer
with every succesful step: so yes, maybe it's more efficient to focus on the single small
step rather than the end goal. It is important though not to forget the overall strategy
while focusing on the smaller "tactics"...

In Bejeweled the moves must be planned ahead to achieve the best result from each one
of them, in the same way marketing actions must be planned and executed in the
best possible way, always remembering though that a mediocre not-so-well-implemented
action can be more succesfull (and improved based on feedback) than the oh-so-perfect
action that isn't executed because "it still needs to be perfected a little more"... You can
watch the Bejewled board all day but until you actually do something (even something
wrong!) you'll never get closer to the victory ;°)

    ciao,
    Saul
