is Wordpress really a better choice than Blogger in my case?

Hi guys,

I know, I know... Wordpress vs Blogger discussion has already finished, right?

From what I gather the general agreement on this topic is that Wordpress on your host is better, because you own your site and don't have to worry about losing it "just because Google doesn't like it".

but I've been wondering if that's really the case for me...

I build niche sites and monetize it only through Adsence. all the traffic is solely driven through google search.

So, basically, my traffic, monetization platform and the host for written content, are all google. In other words, Google has me on the balls.

I know this is unwise. SO ive been thinking of building some niche sites on self-hosted Wordpress. I've actually created a few but personally like the blogger dashboard better.

so it got me thinking, for making Adsence niche site, using wordpress really worth it?

my point is;

Its true Google can delete your blogger site any moment, but they can equally delete your Adsence account or search ranking.

this means even you use self-hosted Wordpress, Google can kill you any minute.

Because of this, "Wordpress is better because Google can delete Blogger any minute" is really not plausible in my case. They can still kill my Wordpress site if I drive traffic through Google and monetize it with Adsence.

What are your thoughts on this? For making Adsence sites that drive traffic from google search, Choosing Wordpress over Blogger makes any sense?

  • Google can kill your ADS, but not your CONTENT. You can replace the ads - there are several similar advertisers out there, and you can just plug one into the site in its place. It ends up being a minor hiccup, and then your income picks right back up where it left off.

  • Of course self-hosted WordPress is better and it's many way.

    If you are using blogger, you might have chance of losing both of your blog and adsense. But if you are using self-hosted WordPress at least you won't lose it.

    Yes, indeed. For some people, it finished back in 2009 when Blogger's FTP facility (and with it, the facility to update "self-hosted Blogger" blogs) was withdrawn.

    Strinctly speaking, the "dilemma" isn't about Blogger vs Wordpress. It's about self-hosted or hosted at Blogger. "Hosted at Blogger" is just a no-gain, no-advantage way to set things up. It makes no difference at all (to the underlying point of this conversation) whether you happen to use Wordpress for your AdSense sites (I don't touch Wordpress, myself) or any of the 500 other ways of making a website which you can own and control yourself.

    It's not only plausible in your case: it's true in your case.

    Yes; plenty of sense.

    If what you're really saying is that you think you won't ever get your Blogger blogs deleted, "because your only intended monetization is AdSense", well, that's a different matter. Try it and see whether a group of competitors ever starts "flagging" your AdSense blogs and they end up being removed by an automated process, as has happened to others. :p

    • My own story isn't far off of that.

      It's been a few years now since I lost my Adsense account, so I have some perspective on it. At the time, Google was trying to get a handle on MFA scraper sites, and they asked people to report them.

      I found my content on several of these MFA sites and duly reported them. The sites vanished. Turned out that they were all run by some kind of Russian syndicate, and they figured out that the sites that were getting nuked in the rankings were the ones scraping my content.

      Their 'solution'? Click-bomb my legitimate sites out of existence. I noticed the spike in clicks, and told Google I thought something weird was going on. They thanked me, and a couple of days later I got the 'account suspended' notice when I tried to log in.

      I did work my way through the appeals process, and unlike most, I did get a response from a rep there. They informed me that even though they could find no wrongdoing on my part, my account still represented a risk to advertisers and would remain suspended.

      With the perspective of time, I understand their position. I only lost a couple of hundred dollars, but I know of others who lost thousands.

      My Chitika account was nuked when a competitor came to the same page on my site several times a day and clicked the same ads.

      Yahoo closed down the ad network.

      That's when I decided I would not rely on contextual advertising for income.

  • I'm not a blogger guru (I've never even used it)

    But I've been in the computer science game for a while.. For what it's worth...

    You typically want a solution that's widely implemented regarding content management..

    More resources available, more support available, more video tutorials, etc.

  • If you don't want to loose your sites and adsense accounts. Why don't you try Squidoo. Squidoo is sharing their adsense earning.

    after reading what you guys have to say on this, I've decided to change my mostly-Blogger portfolio and start creating more WP sites.

  • I too prefer Wordpress. Actually, I haven't used much of Blogger to give a real long-term comparison. But just take a look at the kind of sites that are using Wordpress:

  • It depends on what your goal is. If you want to make a full time income with Adsense then investing in domains and hosting is the right way, but if you just want to pay a couple of bills each month with it then Blogger is sufficient.

    Just don't make blogs which have too many posts i.e. 100+ because if the blog gets deleted then you'll lose a lot of traffic.

    While Blogger has it's disadvantages, it also has the advantages of

    a) No yearly domain fees
    b) No plugins, WP versions to update continuously
    c) Better rankings in Google. It's clear that Blogger has a ranking advantage over WordPress in Google, you only need to see how many spammy looking blogs rank on 1st page.

  • Just remember to build site for humans and not bot if you want to keep your ranking and ad sense flying..
  • +1 for Wordpress for all of the above, plus the multi-site/multi-domain capabilities.
  • If you're serious about building a long-term sustainable business with blogs, go with a platform that you have more control over others. That is the bottom line IMHO
  • In a recent interview with Matt Cutts, Google's Head of Web Spam, Google likes WP. That platform handles most of the SEO of bloggers and makes it easy for bots to index the site.

    And WP is much more than a blog, though that's how it gained its popularity. It's really a content management system. It's unlikely that you'll need anything else.

    If you want a bit more variety in the themes, then find someone to design what you want. But, Cutts says that it's important to keep things simple. He says that you need to think about all search engines; not just Google.
