Bloggin' Topics: Less or More?

Hey Peeps,

So I'm thinking of starting a blog...

Making money from it is not a priority, but I would like to build up a readership and get some interaction going.

I'm interested in the following 'things':

- IM

- Goal Setting

- Cheesy Reality Shows

- Travel (not as much as the others...but I spend a few months each year in India)

I'm not sure whether I should focus on 1-2 topics or include all 4.

Do any of you keep a personal blog where you talk about BizNess too?

Or do you think that it would be better to focus on just one of the aspects above?

I'd really like to have a blog where I talk about whatever's going on in my life (which would involve all 4 of the above)...but I suppose I could separate them onto separate sites if it was a better experience for my readers.

Would appreciate any of your lovely thoughts...

Joe

    Hey mate,

Great to see you taking some action. I'm not sure how much experience you have so I apologise if you know this stuff, but:

It’s best to focus on one thing per blog because it's good for monetization. If you have too many topics, you are running your Blog thin and not concentrating on becoming an expert of one field. That’s just my advice.
Also if you have too many topics, you would be selling loads of different products, which means you would have to get traffic from loads of different niches; this is making it harder for yourself.

Even if you don't care about money, you want targetted traffic to your Blog, and if you have too many topics you will have to drive targetted traffic from 3 or 4 different niches; why make it so hard? Just focus on one.

Start small – think big. Start with a blog on just one topic. Learn to drive traffic to that blog and learn to make money from the traffic.

    Just remember these following points;

    1. Create a blog on 1 niche
    2. Set up a way to capture emails/names of people coming to our site (squeeze page etc)
    3. Sell affiliate products/your own products on your blog
    4. Drive TRAFFIC.

Those are the basics to get started, study each part and then take action and begin!

Remember, make GOOD QUALITY content. If you do to many topics, you’ll find it hard to deliver high quality content on everything. Doing one topic will help you create good content on one topic. You don’t have to post 3 times or 4 times a week. Just do it a few times a month, but make sure its excellent content, and learn to drive traffic to that content.

If you just want to make something for fun, then it doesn't really matter. Just make it however you want, talk abotu whatever you want, and people will find your Blog one way or another.

    Hope that helps.

I just want to add to Joey's comments that once you established your expertise in 1 niche, then I allow if not recommend you to branch out to communities of entirely different niche. Your eventual products in different niches can be related to each other if the benefits are applicable to them.

Hi Joey thanks for taking the time to respond.

However, I'm not looking at this as a method to generate income, I'm more interested in creating a blog that ppl enjoy reading. I make my living online but I'm not thinking about presenting myself as an expert in either category.

I want to do this for fun, monetization can come later if needed and is appropriate.

Thanks tho it was a detailed response.

In that case Joe, mix it up! If you're already making money on the net and just want to have a little fun, then you don't have to worry about getting that targetted traffic and what not. Just have fun, and deliver good valuable content.

Would love to see it when you've put it up

If it is a personal blog that you don't intend to monetize, then feel free to mix and match. If you intend to promote anything on there at any point in the future though I'd recommend against mixing the topics you have listed (outside of IM and Goal Setting maybe).

Edit: Check it out, only Joe's in this thread.

Here's my advice: Focus on one thing on your blog. Sure, you can add your life experience but make it related to your blog's topic.

Doing a blog about "anything that happens in your life" will rarely works, unless you are a very famous guy...

Pick your niche and add really good content into it to get some interactions and readership going.

    Hi Joe,

    Hope you are well today!

I vaguely remember seeing a post here at the W.F. that stated someone had set up a blog without much planning and just focused on generating content on a regular and strict basis.

Then the post went on to say that it started to rank well in Google and things really started to take off in terms of traffic, momentum etc.

It is sometimes the case that when you are not really concerened about making money from something in an immediate sense that you seem to just create more by not thinking too much.

Anyway if you really want to set up a blog regarding something you are passionate about then go ahead.

If you give it the care and attention it deserves and keep updating it; you may soon find that it could just take off without you really focusing on making money from it.

All the best with it and keep us posted on how it goes for you!!!

To find good high traffic blog topics, check on Reddit and Twitter and see what is popular. The NFL Refs are hot right now..haha....here are some more tips on blogging.

    1. Get a great blog platform and theme (Wordpress.org)
    2. Find a topic you want to write about
    3. Become an expert on this topic and write compelling blog
    4. Drive traffic to blog using Social Media and Search Marketing
    5. Monetize blog with Google Adsense or Clickbank Ads (related to blog)

Well since you don't intend to monetize the blog, you can mix up as many topics or niches that you can handle just make sure they are informative enough for your readers. In the nearest future, don't try to monetize a blog where you have so many topics.

I would like to suggest you that you need to go for all four options. But keep it mind that people like quality not quantity. So, keep focus on that. Best of luck for you and your blog.

Hey everyone - I just wanted to thank you all for your answers.

Ive been busy with college the last few days and wasn't able to be active on the forum.

FYI ive decided to focus on self improvement because that's what I spend most of my mental energy on and am most passionate about. I'm just focussing on contributing content every day at the moment. Regarding monetization I have put in an Amazon link whenever I have made reference to a book.

Thanks again for all your advice

      Joe
