Amazon Commission Percentage. Starts to Get Ridiculous?

When I created my Amazon Associate account for about two years ago, the affiliates could earn up to 15% commission (I think if I don't remember wrong). But now, I'm getting emails all the time from amazon that they're lowering the commission percentages in their associate program.

As I said, for two years ago an affiliate could earn up to 15% commission which isn't that bad. But you had to make a lot of sales to reach that percentage of course. But now, you can earn maximum 8,50% commission after 3100+ sales...

I think the Amazon Associate program starts to get ridiculous. Why are they lowering their commission percentages all the time? Aren't they afraid of losing their affiliates?

What's your thought around this? It would be nice to hear someone elses thoughts around this because I haven't seen anybody talking about it yet here.

Earning at least 5 figures per month; anything less means you're doing it all wrong. :p

The 15% rates were for their sister sites such as MYHABIT and AmazonSupply.com which are now only 8%. I don't think 15% has ever applied to the rest of Amazon products.

I always thought it started at 4% and topped out at 8%.

A retailer has to base affiliate commissions on the profit margin. Amazon is known for very good prices. So commissions have to be lower.

I have no problem with that at all. I still sell Amazon products over other products from places like ClickBank because I make more money. Even on the lower commission percentages. Amazon is well known and people trust buying from them. Makes the sale much easier.

I actually love it when I read posts where people refuse to sell Amazon products because they can get a higher percentage from another company that consumers don't know or trust. Puts more money in my pocket.

Always base your business on the bottom line; your profit. Not on commission percentages.

This is a big reason why I prefer Amazon and eBay over other options such as Clickbank. With Amazon and eBay I am pretty confident I'm giving folks very good prices and not gouging them just to put money in my pocket.

Plus, both Amazon and eBay have literally millions of products, so these two affiliate programs cover tons and tons of niches.

Amazon by the far is the biggest market today, you shouldn't expect their commission to increase. As a manner of fact I believe with time it will go ever lower.

As a publisher you would still want to do business with them even if they offering 1%, Most of the big industries wouldn't go as far as 8%.

You realize you bumped a two year old thread right?

I am around 10 percent as well at the moment, say thanks to the christmas shopping season for that, in January you likely drop to 4-5 percent.

Although it's an old thread it would be a good time to point out that I don't see anything has changed 2 years down the line - Amazon is still a nice earner (though not QUITE 5 figures in my case ), with random sales still coming in from links which I put somewhere on some site 7-8 years ago and don't even know where they are coming from any more. I don't believe the commissions scale has changed recently, it still seems quite restrictive, and I do hope it doesn't go down more, but it is more than compensated for by everything people have pointed out already - Amazon's awesome cross-selling and trusted status that makes it win over more "generous" schemes time and time again.

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise
