Is Getting A .Co Domain Name A Bad Idea If You Don't Also Own The .Com?

If the .com is taken by someone else is it usually a bad idea to get a .co as an alternative? Some people might add the m out of habit and you may lose money to the person who does own the .com.

Personally, I wouldn't want to build a business on a domain-extension of which the .com version already belongs to someone else. (If you don't own it, you can never control what might end up on it, in future.)

For the reason you mention, among others.

At some point, you're probably going to lose traffic to the owner of the .com. (I suppose if all your traffic is always going to come from people clicking on links, that might not be so much of an issue, but still ...).

Resale value is going to be poor.

I also think .co domains are expensive for what they are, but that's another matter.

I have one .co that is a keyword domain that the .com is taken and I have built my father's site on it and it works well for the purpose I use it for.

    ... but I don't care much for .co's because:

    1. They are too expensive
    2. It is natural for people to type .com so you could lose a lot of traffic to the .com version unless they access your site directly from a link.
