Having Fun With Wordpress Spam Comments

Hey guys,

Anyone who has a wordpress site that gets any sort of traffic being large or small knows all about these spam bots that post on your articles.

Thankfully, WP gives you option to approve the comments before they post.

Lately I've been getting a few random comments from spammers that have those poorly (and I mean POORLY) worded comments that most of the time don't make any sense.

I've been clicking the big red SPAM link to disallow them...but then it hit me...

LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!

I realized that as the site admin... I can EDIT their post!

So I think from time to time, I'm going to rewrite their comment about how wonderful they are. Then instead of their spammy website link they include, I'll include a link to another one of my articles.

Good times.

NOTE: I haven't done this yet...but man it seems like a good idea! haha

Just delete them. some of those comments can be just tests to find auto-approve blogs. if you allow them and they find out they will add your blog into their auto-approve list which will result in even more spam.

I have disabled wordpress comments and only use facebook comments on my blog. no more spam and you get the benefits of social traffic.

That's an excellent point I never factored in. Good looking out.

Do you have a plugin you use for facebook comments that you could suggest?

How does the Facebook comments widget affect the page load speed of your blog?

It's been a while since I last logged in but I wanted to tell you I have it installed on my page. (Link in my Sig)

It doesn't slow down any load times at all. I highly recommend it.

If he changes the link, I don't think they can find out that the comment was approved.

Most blog comment spammers use scrapebox (unfortunately.. it gives all other SB users a bad name)

SB checks to see if they were instantly approved by finding the original URL somewhere on the page.

So if he were to change the original URL to be one of his own, they wouldn't know that it was approved since it wont be able to find the original URL that they posted.

ps: i like the username! haha CtrlAltRage.. thats a good one

That is not a good idea at all. You would never want to approve any type of spam comment. Just delete them. I get them all the time and I delete every one of them.

I saw a plug-in a while back that takes comment spam and automatically changes the links to what you want them to be. I think it did a lot more also, probably some form of re-writing and so on... I found it entirely hilarious.

Did i hear you right, you want to comment on your own blog with your URL?

It won't stick if the URL is from the same site.

If another of your site, it won't stick if hosted on one hosting with all your previous site.

I won't waste my time on this.

Baby girl if you accept those comments (even editted) then WordPress will let that e-mail auto approve and then they'll keep rubbin' their junk in your comments!

    Don't do that to yourself!

Seems absolutely pointless. You might as well just write your own comments rather than wait for spammers to hit your site.

There is a plugin that contacts back the poster of spam messages. You can send any info you want. You can pitch him IM products or methods or tools!

I know the response will be poor...but hey..it is done automatically! So who cares!

No..if only i could remember the name of that plugin! I know it was sold as WSO not very long time ago! Will let you know if i can find it!

It gonna be waste of time. Instead of this, you can create quality contents and it will add more value to your blog.
