Help with Domain Registration/Transfer

Hey guys,

1and1.com has a great deal right now on domain registrations at 99 cents each. I love that.

I currently have the $10 a month plan at Hostgator, and can handle up to multiple sites.

Is there a way to get a coupon/discount to transfer the domain from 1and1 to Hostgator, so I can get the best of both worlds?

    I suspect you may be confusing "transfer" with "DNS redirection", Jeremy?

    It's normal to register domains in one place and host them in another. (In fact it's potentially a huge mistake to have the registration held where the site is also hosted: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7437169 ).

    The answer to your question is that it is possible to transfer a domain registration from 1-and-1 to Hostgator (though not within 60 days of registering the domain) but I don't think that's actually what you want to do? I think what you want to do is hold the domain-registration at 1-and-1 and host the site at Hostgator, in the normal way? That's both easier and better, probably. You simply need to redirect the DNS to your Hostgator hosting. (I admit that I wouldn't actually register a domain-name at 1-and-1, myself, even if they paid me: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7508519 ).
  • Actually, that's what I did. You see, my wife *WAS* right - I do have MMD - male mental disorder. I just forgot. (DNS redirection, in other words.)

    I am reading the thread on what Domain service to purchase from. I think Namecheap may be better, as it has the free privacy block.

      Don't worry about it - I hear that's not nearly as bad as "man flu"?

      Personally I register at Namecheap and host at Hostgator (or sometimes elsewhere depending on what sort of site I want to put on it). Many Warriors do, and recommend this combination. I know discount codes/vouchers are attractive, but for the sake of a few dollars, I think you're much better off doing this than using 1-and-1, myself.

  • Is it really 99 cents, or is it 99 cents + $8 or $9 (don't know exact figure) for domain privacy (which is a must to take now).

    Just Google 1&1 scam before falling for their 99cent domains. As for transferring, if you do go ahead and buy, just set the nameservers to your hostgator account after purchasing. That applies to whoever you buy from.

    Just be aware that you should not transfer your domains to your host or buy them from your host. Your domains are safer staying in a registrar separate from your hosting package.

  • I agree with @Alexa Smith - just change the DNS records to point to hostgator and your site should be fine.

    • A lot of people have had issues pointing HostGator nameservers to domains that was registered with 1and1, and I personally had the same issue. It is a 1and1 problem and not a HostGator problem.

      I would go with Namecheap or Godaddy for domains and if you want to host with HostGator, they are always good with great support.
