Personal Development Niche: How Would You Go About It?

So for 2013, I am thinking to go into the personal development niche. It is a passion. It is who I am.

Go to my shelves and you will see books on the topic along with plenty of business books (and history).

But I kept pushing this off due to saturation.

So, starting from scratch, not wanting to do blog (rather keep it email blogging) - what would you do?

Of course, it is all about one's style and approach and therefore developing trust with the audience, but how would you go about getting that audience?

Where would you get the traffic from?

One more thing. I understand having an angle, AKA sub niches would help but I struggle with this as I love the whole thing. I mean, going to the extreme, is Tony Robbins in the subniche? Or Darren Hardy of SUCCESS Magazine? Don't think so.

Alright, let's hear it.

    This is like asking...

How long is a piece of string?

Depends what you want to do Roy?

What are you hoping to accomplish?

    What is your goal?

    What is your objective?

What will be your specialization within this niche?

The way to connect to others in this niche is to carve out a name for yourself. Bring something unique to the table which nobody else is doing to date. Look for a unique angle to exploit. Position yourself in the market. Look at the market through the eyes of the people you're trying to connect with.

If you cannot position yourself in this market despite this being your number one passion in life, how are people going to know you're there or what benefits you have on offer to help out the people you're trying to reach?

What exactly can you do for other people looking for self development advice?

Then it's a case of choosing your platform and outlining your unique benefits, why others should listen to you. This is how you build up a following of potentially interested people who want to find out more about what you have to offer.

For example, I'm a copywriter specializing in this niche. I too have a strong passion for the subject. Like you, recently I was thinking how best to go about entering this niche, how to position myself within this niche so first I asked myself...

What is it people interested in this niche, what is it that a large number of them essentially want?

Starting from this starting block, I started to develop a business plan outlining my core strengths and ways in which I could offer these people a distinct advantage.

Could you not do the same?

The niche is so broad you ideally need to narrow your focus to concentrate all of your energy into this sub niche to make it a success, to help as many other individuals as possible.

    Kindest regards,

Mr. Andrews hit it dead on - you need a business plan before you get started.

From your description you are already involved in the industry so you can capitalize on that involvement. Talk to your peers and others in the industry and ask questions - then listen. You may be surprised at what you hear.

Go to forums and other internet gathering places and listen to what others are saying and more importantly what are they asking for.

The best way to create a successful business in any niche - no matter how crowded - is to give the customer what they want. A prime example is the Idiot's Guide book series. The computer and technology industry is overwhelmed with information and yet a simple guide that started with how to turn on a computer has become it's own industry.

    Good Luck

Thank you Mark for your input.

And you are right, narrowing it down to what people want is important and the like the person said below you, ask around, check out the forums, learn more about what is not being done and what they would like to see.

I have a background in NLP/Hypnosis and I do it well. Perhaps I can research people who want to learn more about this and what it can do in their life.

Once I figure that out, I can develop something around them and let them know when I got something.

      Thank you, again.

Thanks for the luck and added advice. Like I wrote above, you are right. Searching what people are asking and what can I do to deliver that is key. I am right on that.

Let's see what I come up with.

I think you are getting a handle on things. Whether it's personal development or a +3 handicap, your objective as guru-in-waiting should be to find where people are, where they want to go and how you can help them get from point A to point B. Once you have that down, you simply have to figure out how to position yourself in the market space so that people sign up for the journey...

If you're into NLP / Hypnosis contact one of my former copywriting students to ask him for some ideas Roy.

He's heavily into NLP and might have some ideas for you.

His name is Ben (from Hungary): View Profile: benracz

Tell him I sent you over to him, I'm sure he'll be pleased to help you out.

If not, I'll kick him up the bum.

        Kindest regards,

          Hey John.

I like that line, guru-in-awaiting. Or maybe Guru-elect?

And yes, like the others have said, finding out what is not there or what the people want first will help me develop an strategy in how to position myself in the niche.

What is interesting, and don't know if this is part of PD (it is), is that I am losing weight right now. On my Facebook profile, people are constantly engaging with me on that topic and anything inspirational. Perhaps there is one place I can tap into....

          Working it out.

Wow, Mark. That is mighty kind of you and I thank you for the time and for the connection. I will message him shortly.

I am curious, if I may ask, what direction are you going in PD and have you started?

    Use what you got.
I know one Guru at my place that manage to make a lot of money by teaching people how to be a positive.
He teach people to smile and manage their anger.
Ask yourself, what you can give to the people? so the people can give you back.

I would be interested to see how you continue to approach this because it has been something that I considered myself. I think that above all people need to hear your story and know that they can trust you and you can get them where they need to be.

What do you mean, David, by guru at your place? City? Country? Curious.

And that is a simple approach - be positive and plenty of those. I have plenty to offer and it is just a question on how to position it and attract the crowd. Thank you.

Well, as I develop a strategy, I will share over time and see what happens. And you are right, my story is mine and there are those who can relate to me that won't to others.
