Sometimes Updating Something Can Be a Mistake!

Hi Guys,

I recently updated one of my best Squidoo lenses. It was sending my website about 2,000 unique visitors a month, and I was getting 7 or more new subscribers to my list everyday.

Then I updated/changed 2 of the pictures on the lens.... and immediately my subscribers started slacking off! I checked into it more, and the traffic to the lens has also dropped.

While I am hoping it will pick back up, I am wondering what really happened? Were my previous images perhaps ranking well in Google, and when I changed them they lost that rank?

So just a word of warning - although they say updating is a good thing, be sure you know what you are doing... the saying, "Don't fix it if it ain't broke" is very true! Sometimes leaving well-enough alone is best.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Have you had any similar experiences?

Still learning by experience, sometimes the hard way!
Ruth

Wow that is a drastic consequence of such a small change. I guess this is the downside to using web 2.0 pages for inbound marketing... They have traffic flowing through them and a lot of domain trust; but you've got no analytics and no idea how exactly it is picking up that traffic.

Why do you change them back?

Also how long did you test the new changes fro?

I have not changed them back because it was actually impossible to go back to what was before, even if I had uploaded the exact same pictures again. The update would have wiped out all previous data/ranking for those pictures - there was no going back (As far as I understand it any way!)

I am just working hard at promoting it again to get the traffic etc. back up

Yeah these types of things can happen.

However I don't think changing a picture on the Squidoo lens would affect the incoming traffic to that lens, it can certainly affect how many new subscribers you get but not the actual traffic coming to that lens.

As no one would see the new photo until they actually get to the lens.
