Anyone know of a good download (preferably free!!!!!!!) for speech to text software? My trusty old laptop doesn't have it.

    Hi Mike,

Google Chrome browser is capable of translating speech to text using Google Translate. I've never used the service personally so I cant say how good it is but it is a free option.

^^This is great. But it costs a lot. Then again it's worth that much.

Like Laurence metnioned: Dragon Naturally Speaking. It beats anything else I've tried - been using it for years, but it is expensive. Well worth the price.

Meanwhile, get on their mailing list (Nuance is the manufacturer.), because several times a year, they put it on sale - most times at half price! Their premium version lets you load it onto several computers too.

They just updated to version 12.5. Version 12 was good, some of the earlier version had issues like not being able to take dictation from an mp3 file you recorded on and external recorder or an audio note recorder like your smart phone. Version 12 handled that fine.

With that feature, it is easy to write down ideas, or even write entire articles while you are driving you car, and turn them into a document later.

Like Ollie, I have not tried the Google Chrome thing to see if it works. It's free, might be worth a test.

How old is your laptop - XP?
Vista and 7 have a text to speech installed as standard. The earlier versions were not that good, but MS seem to have updated it, works fine.
XP versions have it but not all, you may be able to install the drivers though from MS

If you have an iphone or ipod or ipad, there is Dragon Dictate app which is FREE and it works without any pre programming.

      The accuracy is shocking.

Why not try outsource to fiverr to have it transcript for you. I have yet to really use dragon service but i don't think any software can be 100% accurate in translating speech to text.

Have you consider hiring someone to convert your video or mp3 to a text. You can find many virtual assistant in ODesk to do this kind of trivial task. Hire someone with an experience to transcript audio file to text file. Give them a test before hiring, check them trough and assess the accuracy. Happy headhunting.

Free: it's built into Windows from XP onwards (search Control Panel for Speech Recognition). It comes with a tutorial and a series of screens that you read to help train it.

Paid for: Dragon Naturally Speaking. Just make sure that you get the version that works with your version of the operating system - the last one I bought was locked to XP and refused to work with Windows 7. Which was deliberately programmed in by the manufacturers and left a nasty feeling for me. But, that aside, it works well.

What operating system do you have? If you're on Windows 8, 7, Vista, they have this feature built in.

I've tested a lot of speech to text programs and I finally settled on Dragon Naturally Speaking. The latest home edition is only $49.99 at Tiger Direct. You can also find older versions on the cheap on eBay.

As Jill already mentioned, if you have a smart phone, chances are you can download the free DNS app and use it. I have also found it pretty accurate.

Recommended Paid Software: Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Recommended Free Software: Whatever is the OS that you are using right now on your computer or laptop usually has a built in option for you to translate your speech to text. Simply put, modern OS's nowadays have their own voice recognition software. But there's always an issue with their quality as expected always from free things.
