With the google updates and facebook restrictions? What do you guys think?

What avenue of making money would you recommend newbies get into that would keep them from getting disencouraged and quit.

I started 4 weeks ago and built a solo ad business from scratch. Hit my first $100 day on week 3 and today I'm going to hit $300.

It's not harder to make money online nowadays, you just need to focus on one method and pour all of your energy into.

      Good luck!

Thanks guys. I was under the impression that you really have to be an expert at something and offer a s*** ton of value in order to make decent money online.

Is this necessarily true or do a lot of people make money even if they don't have an authority site?

I'm going to say "NO" and this person proved it

Even though Google 'is harder' - whatever the heck that means - there are MORE opportunities now to reach your target audience.

I think you should try and make friends with people who have been working in this industry for a long time and ask them for advice on how to proceed with your business. There will always be someone out there who knows more than you do about internet marketing - throw your pride out the window - and ask for help. It will be much easier in the long run.

From what I have gathered, the most important thing that you need to focus on is building a list. Get a squeeze page up.

Newbies make it harder because they get so overwhelmed with a lot of information. I would suggest first know what it is that they want to get involved in (niche market) and provide every bit of value they can in it. Get a blog up along with a squeeze page and start building their list and relationships. The money will come later. Even if they do get into affiliate marketing, it would still be advisable to build their list.

It is true that newbies are facing more difficulty
    In making money online:

    1. Information overload.. Just look at the WSOs launched each day
    2. High competition. 94% of the INternet marketers are losing money. Let alone newbies.
    3. Poor mentoring/ program. There are too many scam artists taking advantages of newbies
    4. Complicated Marketing concepts. There are too many complicated methods available.
Only do stuffs that make senses and simple to perform..
Trust me.. Internet Marketing is not that glamourous.. It is a very simple concept.. But boring in repetitive tasks each day.

    For Newbie:
    1. Forget about SEO.. Too technical/slow for immediate results..
    2. Affiliate marketing.. Try PPC fr immediate results.. But cost money.
    3. Services/ products.. You can provide your skills for money.. Can be easy to kickstart.

You need to evaluate your situation..
    Everyone has his strength..

I believe there is a place for everyone in this market.

PS: I did not make any money for my 1st three years in internet marketing..
It is when I stop trying every methods available..
I only focus on stuffs that work for me.. I simply scale it up..

Nope, it is not harder for newbies to make money.
Forum marketing is a tried and true method that
continues to work. Just provide useful info on a
consistent basis and a signature, and you are all set.

If newbies have a budget, they can purchase solo ads,
buy leads, or invest in offline marketing. We have to
keep in mind that more and more people are turning
to the internet for ways to pick up some extra cash,
so newbies will always have an audience of new people
      to market to.

Yes, it's harder, if you mean compared to 5 or 6 years ago. Consumers are wiser and more picky and protective than they used to be. Laws and regulations will be passed within the next 5 years that will change things quite a bit for the Internet generally I believe, which will make it tougher for all.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7914831].message }}
  • Way harder for newbies today than when I started 14 years ago, no doubt about it.

No, the industry is constantly evolving.

I'd say there is one thing, right in the very beginning, way before I started, it might have been ridiculously easy to make money, because there was no competition. That leads people to still think that IM is about easy money, so beginners have the view that it will be easy, rather than take effort, like any other business.

Whatever you choose to do, do it consistently, and work hard...

      Harder no.

Go with something you love doing and would do even if you weren't paid. Research what people are buying that is related to your likes. And then devote 90% of you time selling and learning to sell to them, and 10% to everything else.

yes, quite hard staring the business in this IM world with that much competitors nowadays. One thing for sure each person have something to share, and that something can be monetized in this IM world. So, everyone should be able to make money in here, no matter how much. One tips for the newbie out there : don't rely on SEO, one update from Google and your business it will hit the rock bottom, use alternatives such as social network.

It might be, though I won't completely agree...take pinterest for example. A few months ago, people could spam their site with affiliate links and make a lot of money, but now, they need to provide value and only then, they'll get results.

That might sound like a disadvantage to you, but the way I see it, they're letting us build a proper long-term business here. Who'll people like more? Someone who spams them with affiliate links, or someone who provides them value and then maybe just mentions the product their promoting (with an embedded affiliate link or something).

Easy ways don't last for long, and I'm here for the long haul, so I'd see the quality of the business is definitely better than it was years ago. It might take longer to make money, but that money and business will stick, that's all matters.

Well, as for your question about where you can start. If you don't have money for capital, I'd suggest you provide some services and first build get some money for investment. After that, the best way to start would be to set up a blog or website in a niche that you think you can work on, fill it with value and building your list through it.

There are also hundreds of other methods out there, and you can choose any, but my advice is, choose something that you think you'd be comfortable doing, and stick with it. You might not get success right away, but keep working at it and you'll definitely reach your goals. Good luck!

I think it's getting easier for a newbie to make money online now with new tools coming out and the industry is always evolving.Tools that used to cost a lot more now cost just a fraction to get started. Most newbies can get started without having to tamper with technical stuff and just focus on marketing their online business.

You should not rely on Google and facebook alone for your business. There are plenty of other ways to promote your business, just need to be creative. I think it is easier now for newbies since they can make use of new and better services that were not available earlier.

I don't believe it is harder to make money online than it used to be. Five years ago over 90% of people failed and now over 90% of people fail.

For most part people fail because they still (and did so before) think that one can make money online 24/7 with minimal input. Well, that is not true. Any business requires hard work, focus and determination. If you don't have that, you'll fail be it online or offline.

As well, apart from focus most people do not set goals. If one does not have set goal that person will eventually fail.

Just look at criniit above. Brand new marketer with a focus and a goal. Simple in 4 weeks he was able to report excellent results.

With set goals, focus and determination (and hard work) it is possible to do very well in any business including online business.

Also there are new venues for newbies that were not available before. Fiverr is one such example.

It has gotten harder for newbies every year and will continue to do so. As the pond gets bigger, so do the fish.

Back in the early days of the boom era all you needed was free hosting at Geocities, Simplenet, Xoom, etc... then you just get on some banner exchanges and top lists. The only skill you needed was HTML. Bigtime SEO came in the form of keyword stuffing META tags and coloring text the same color as the background. You were super high end if your site ran on CGI scripts. The content of the site didn't even need to be that great to compete against the best.

Nope, I don't think so. Get a lot of information is not necessarily a bad direction for learning IM. Young people are getting used with this situation since they are born in the internet era. They understand how to manage many information, they can calculate which information that they will use right now, or they will use someday, or they useless information that they will just ignore and skip it.

Is it harder? Yes. Absolutely, and I will tell you why ...

Every year there is more and more competition online, and the competition keeps getting better. As you observe about Google, there are now additional roadblocks for things like SEO separate from more competition.

To be on the 1st page of Google means, maybe, 10 link positions. Those positions keep getting moved down the page by Google, so just being on the 1st page may not be good enough. For those few positions there are more and more people competing.

PPC can be even worse. Just 1-3 positions at the top of page getting most of the clicks. The nature of PPC is that it is a battle to the break-even point since so much depends on how much one is willing to bid. There is a lot of competition for those few positions.

There are, of course, new opportunities continually being created, so this is not meant to be doom and gloom, forget it you will never make money.

But, in my opinion, what it means is there must be more "business" analysis of competition, opportunities, and strategies to be employed.

That is what so many newbies fail to grasp. It is not a matter of "winging it" by getting some quick WSO idea and putting up a site. Without skills and proper analysis that is a recipe for failure.

Of course, "failure" itself can be a lesson learned which makes the next project better.

If there is a common theme I see in people passing through the forum or IM generally, and not making any money, it is: (1) not having any money to invest and (2) not having (and not obtaining or hiring) basic skills needed to succeed with any venture, whether it is online or offline.

    .

So many people that are new to Internet marketing end up wanting to 'build websites' when 'leveraging existing audiences' would be much more effective.

Most of the info floating around sticks with that 'old school' philosophy of 'register a domain,' 'build a website,' 'build content pages,' and 'build links.' All that building doesn't leave much time for just FINDING existing customers and products and marketing to them without all the extra work.

If I were just starting right now I would focus on Facebook, Tumblr, and YouTube, where I could easily leverage their vast audience sizes to 'build' my own audience of highly targeted prospects.
