in Namecheap a GoDaddy affiliate??? ###UPDATE###

I had GoDaddy send me a comlaint so I moved my domains to namecheap as recommended by a fellow wariior.

I just got off the phone with GODaddy and they have given me 12 hours or they will suspend my domain.

Is Namecheap just another Godaddy affiliate?

###UPDATE###

First of all, THANK YOU to all the Warrior Members who responded and PMed offering to help. YAll are THE BEST! I felt like I had an entire
army of people willing to help me. Thank you thank you for all of your support, feedback, and offers of help.

Now - what do you make of this?

Woke up this morning to THIS email in my inbox:

Dear Sir or Madam,

The complaint volume, at this time, is not enough to cause a major concern and this, coupled with your explanation of the situation is reason enough for Go Daddy to consider this matter closed.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

No, they're not connected as far as I've ever heard.

They've given you 12 hours to do what?

12 hours to provide optin information on a past client who has attended a class I taught.

I explained to them that I only have records dating back 4 years but I have been teaching the classes for 10 years.

I have gathered the email addresses for the last 10 years and I mail to them occasionally with new class or product offerings.

    Some a$$ complained to them.

So I already transferred them to Namecheap - can't godaddy tell that? How can they suspend my domains if they are no longer there?

NameCheapDomains.com is a reseller for GoDaddy, but I don't believe NameCheap.com is affiliated with GoDaddy.

so if they are a "reseller" then Godaddy does indeed have control over my domains - right?

You said "Name Cheap"... did you register with NameCheapDomains.com or NameCheap.com?? They are two different companies.

No, I don't think so. If I'm not mistaken, Namecheap is a subsidiary of eNom.

Godaddy is fairly notorious for their extortionate tactics. Holding domains hostage, demanding "fines" and "penalties" for this or that infraction. Paul Myers a couple of years ago, wrote a caustic piece in his newsletter about the runaround Godaddy gave him - and their threats - when he tried to transfer a domain he'd sold.

Best bet, have a lawyer write them a blunt note about their claims. Let 'em know you can shoot back.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,

    No, they're not.

I don't understand your situation. Someone complained to them about one of your students, so they come after you? Please, tell me there's more to it than that. You should report this to the Online BBB, Trust-e, and ICANN. I'm pretty sure they can't do that.

No - one of my former students complained to the big GODaddy that I sent them an unsolicited email.

The only emails I have in my list are from previous students in my past classes. Of course, that spans 10 years time and thousands of people. I only have records as required by the state for the last 4 years.

GODaddy says that I have 12 hours or they are shutting me down. They sent me an email about it over a month ago and I explained the situation to them in a reply email.

Now they are telling me that they never got a response, it's an open dispute, and they either want their money or they want proof of optin.

You transferred the registration of the domains to namecheap, but did you transfer the hosting as well?

Is your site still hosted on godaddy servers? If so then perhaps that is what they mean by suspending your domain - the actual hosting of it.

        I agree, GoDaddy Sucks!

Silly question, but did the Go Daddy rep "threaten" to shut down only the one
domain name they got the complaint for? Or your entire account/s?

If you do a WHOIS on the domain name and it lists its sponsoring registrar as
NameCheap, then you can "safely" ignore their threat. As others said, both of
them are separate registrars with no relationships.

One guess is it's possible the domain name is still showing in the account with
them. I've seen cases of domains transferred to other registrars yet it's listed
still with the original registrar, and they're removed from their database once
        brought to their attention.

(Of course, that's hoping they won't shut down your other accounts, knock on
        wood...)

    Charles,

If namecheap.com is not affiliated or a reseller of GODaddy, then why would they be calling me threatening to suspend my domains???

Just a tactic to get money? They have asked for the $199 for two different domains.

Wouldn't they be able to see that I moved the domains over a month ago?

I have transferred and set up hosting on namecheap.com but am still pointing the domains to (nodaddy)WhosYourDaddy.com where my content is hosted.

All I should have to do is reset the nameservers, right?

I have even backed up the mysql DB's and put them up on namecheap but, like I said, I still have the DNS pointed tot he GONOdaddy hosting

But the guy on the phone specifically said "suspend your domain" and he did not mention hosting accounts.

The bad thing is that I have like 15 other domains and hosting accounts still over there

If you're with Namecheap.com now I don't see how they could possibly threaten you with suspension. Sounds like pure extortion to me. Just change your nameservers and host them with someone else.

And THAT is exactly what I am beginning to think.

The guy who called me HAD TO KNOW that my domains had already been transferred. He could just look at my account - in fact - TOLD ME he was looking at my account.

But if they no longer have control of the domain (which he HAS TO KNOW THAT I KNEW THEY DIDNT), why would he threaten to "suspend" the domains?

This doesn't make any sense unless NameCheap.com is associated or affiliated in some way with them.

Yep, if you've moved everything over to your hosting on namecheap then you simply need to go in and point the nameservers to your new namecheap nameservers.

I don;t know who Bob Parsons is...

All I can surmise at this point is that BLOWdaddy is making idle threats and asking for money.

Interesting business tactic to say the least.

They are notorious for these type of extortion attempts. I'm not very worried about my domains there at this time, but I do regret having so many with Godaddy. I don't do any email marketing, so there's not much for people to complain about.

It's idiotic of course, for people to opt in to emails and then complain but this kind of crap happens all the time. What's so difficult about hitting the spam button and losing the emails forever if you're too stupid to remember that you opted in.

    Winebuddy,

The same thing happened to Mike Filsaime with Godaddy. Here is a link to his story about being held hostage.

Just Google "Mike Filsaime" + Godaddy and you can find his story about getting locked out. It is in his "The MikeFilsaime.com PowerMarketing Newsletter" dated Friday, June 3rd, 2005.

I tried to post the URL, but I guess I don't have a high enough post count in the Forum to do that

    Good Luck.

Hi, Namecheap and godaddy are NOT the same thing.

Actually godaddy can be a pain because of that same reason your are going through.

But here is a huge piece of info, do you want to know who godaddy gets the service from?

    wildwestdomains.com

Want to start your own godaddy business, there you go.

I strongly recommend namecheap.com, it is the best place to purchase domains, they are not a pain like godaddy and sites tend to replicate faster.

GoDaddy is connected with WildWestDomains. Namecheap as mentioned in a previous post is connected with eNom.

Side note... Don't host with the same company that holds your domains. You should get hosting with HostGator and have your domains at Namecheap.com.

That is like a big bully walking away from a fight he is scared to fight in... but then talking smack on the way out making excuses why he wouldn't fight. "I can find you anytime I want", "you are lucky I have to be home in 5 minutes, or else i'd...".

Glad this looks to be resolved...for now...

Godaddy is still in the picture though....they need to go! You've just experinced the darkside of Godaddy....do you really expect that they will not try something like this again? Not if...but when!!

Take this time to gather all your belongings at Godaddy...any remaining domains or hosting & get as far away from them as you can...

Try Hostgator for your hosting & namecheap.com for your domains. Your headaches will disappear...

    Good luck,
    Ken
