Is there any quick, efficient way that I could get an idea of whether or not the product I am building an affiliate site for is going to go obsolete in the near future?

I don't know of a quick nor efficient way. Best suggestion would be to study trade magazines for the product category in question and see what is 'trending', what is new and upcoming in the industry, etc.
But if the product itself has a strong sales history, regardless of updates in the future it will still drive sales for some time.

Not without a Crystal ball, not that I believe in them. Maybe having a look at how many searches are being made for your product might give some indication of the need for it. While it may not predict the future it may give you an idea of the need and numbers of people. Another thought is, can your product start a sales funnel so if it does become obsolete you have another item or two to follow it up? Hope this helps.

    Check searches.
Find other similar products.. are they selling ??
Check out forums.. are people talking about it ??

But possibly the best way would be to put up a Squeeze Page..
then throw some traffic.. ( targeted ).. at it..
    and see if people optin.

What kind of product is it? Information, digital, physical, etc.?

Is it something that you know inside and out?

Or is it just something that you had an idea about and want to go to market with?

You can't really know if something will go obsolete in the future... the creator of the VHS didn't know if his invention would go bust or not... he just took it to market.

50 years from now (or whenever) cars may be obsolete and all we've got left is flying cars. The point? Is to simply just go... don't worry about the future... you've got the idea, now take it to market... NOW!

Now is all that matters... and if your product goes obsolete... oh well, shift, change, zig and zag and make changes.
