Text Logo VS Picture Logo

I am wondering which logo is more effective. I come across sites / blogs with very minimal logos now, mainly text.

Which is more effective from a marketing standpoint? A text logo or a text logo with a graphic in hopes that the graphic won't turn potential site users / customers off in some kind of way?

How did you guys and girls go about drafting your logo?

    I don't have a logo. Though, I should probably get one soon.

    Some of the largest companies only have text as logos... Ebay, Google, McDonalds, Microsoft, etc.

      McDonalds employs an iconic, stylized "M" in addition to their base text.

      This example defines the only question that needs asking:

      Do I want to raise brand awareness with an icon that can stand with and without its associated name?

      Think about all the online applications such as forum avatars, social media avatars etc where you are limited to a square ratio. Is many cases (particularly for long names) text alone would be inappropriate.

    According to me picture logos will give more unique identity to a blog/site. It is also part of branding. Creating a logo is not very complicated. I am not a graphic person so I use some designer's service. You will find many good designers on the warrior forum. You can also find good graphic designers at Fiverr.

    I would recommend picture logos rather than text. Picture logos will be much easier to brand. Especially in your social media profiles and picture sites.

    A picture logo will help create a more effective brand that can be easily recognizable. However, do not see this as a substitute for not using text. Ensure all images have ALT text so search engines can still read from them.

    To put it in a safe way, having an image logo is a riskier move than just having a text logo. Text logos people will get the idea of your company almost instantly while image logos not so much.

    A text logo will keep the theme of your site while a image logo will offer nothing as far as the theme of your site goes. It may affect the seo.

    Pictures speak a thousand words. Make it as professional as possible, and relevant to your site. Like mentioned above, you may outsource for a unique logo, but you can create one for yourself that suits your needs.

      Paying attention to visualization is almost a must in web 2.0 environment. I agree that some online businesses don't need additional graphics since their business name is already a brand. But if you are on a high competitive market than additional attraction factors are vital. Image logo is one of the ways.

      Image logo is also important to those who promote their domain which is not much self-explanatory and don't tell users of what the service or product is all about. While they search a niche and visit dozens of websites you need something to catch their eye. Good website design and creative logo can do a great job promoting your product online.

    The overwhelming majority of people are visual learners. For that reason a picture logo would appeal to the majority of people. The most successful brands use both picture and text. Thing of Apple with the apple image or McDonalds with the golden arches or Nike with the swish. Combining a very well recognized picture logo with your text name allows you much more options in marketing and advertising. If space is limited just add the image. If space is large and image and text. For professional communications use text only.

    The largest, most profitable companies in the world all have incredibly simple logos. Usually just wordmarks, or a simple 2D icon.

      It's interesting that you asked this - at the same time there is a thread asking why pay a graphic designer to do a book cover instead of paying $5 at Fiverr or doing your own cover.

      I think the same advice applies here.

      An experienced logo designer will be able to answer your question and tell you the advantages and disadvantages of each form - text only or graphics.

      There are lots of personal opinions here but they are most likely based on simple personal preferences. A professional logo designer can give you the benefit or his/her past work experience. To me, that's the person you should listen to.

      I'm guessing that both logo versions have a place and that the type of company/product you have, as well as your brand, will determine which is best for your situation.

      Rely on the true professionals - you as a client will have access to their best information and suggestions.

    A good logo is a good logo. There are plenty of graphic logos that suck and also a lot of great text logos.

    If you're pretty clear on what you want, 99 Designs is a great place to see a lot of options. I recorded a podcast that shares my experience of working with them several times, including how the last contest I did had 500+ entries.

    I'd stay away from the cheap sites like Fiverr or Logo Nerds. You'll get SOMETHING, but it will end up costing you more in the long run since it probably won't be usable.

    Plenty of huge companies around the world only use text in their logos. But the color, font and layout of that text is their logo.

    It really depends for what you are creating the logo and what you hope to achieve. For a simple blog I don't think you need a fancy graphical logo.

    Regardless of pic or text, my big rule for logos is to keep things simple. Less is more. If I can't draw it with a ballpoint pen, it's too complicated. And I'm no artist...

    I'd say a picture logo is more bold and a text logo is more conservative. It depends on what you're marketing. If its a law firm - go with text. If its a gardening site - a picture is more appripriate.

    It all depends on the individual. If you want it to be simple use text and if you want otherwise use picture. If you are using it as a marketing medium I will suggest picture. People are more incline to be attracted by pictures. Just make sure that the picyure logo is handled by a professional.

    I think a picture logo works best. It gives your business a uniqueness that I feel text logos can't give you. Over time, people start associating that picture (if you're the only one with that logo) with your company, and that's how you brand your business.

    I had mine created when I started my business. I didn't have a site (I still don't use mine much, hence the simple design on my site), but my accounts (gmail, warrior forum, social media) always have my logo as avatar and I feel that's helped my business significantly.

    although a text logo is easier to bond and then associate with your brand.
    Seems that more creativity is required when designing a picture logo to make it really outstanding.

        Ever since MS FrontPage came out, graphic (not picture) logos have been easy. Lots of "make your own logo" sites.

        The problem is the same one you have with stock photos. It isn't long before you start noticing the same stock logos with many different names, just like you see the same stock photos chosen again and again for certain markets.

        If you are going to use a graphic logo, make it something unique and personal to your brand.

      That's usually regarded as overall, including using external from their website.
