How do you deal with the stress in your life?

I'm currently going through a rocky, transitional phase of my life... if you've hung around the Off-Topic section the last couple days, you'll know EXACTLY what I'm talking about, but it's no big deal to go check if you don't.

I felt better after three hours of vigorous exercise and a scorching hot shower. When I'm too tired for that, I go for tea.

New day, same sh*t, but a different mindset. I'm back to work and I'm focused.

Life rarely works as planned... planning is good, but the real key is learning how to deal with life when it throws a wrench in the gears.

  • You know what? That's a good question. Can you really do that?

    Lord knows there's no shortage of stress, but a couple of things I do is:

    Take a drive and give myself a chance to breathe

    Watch a favorite movie and fix myself some comfort food like a PB&J sandwich

    Do a little exercise, maybe a few pushups... very few(lol)

    Go sit in a dark room and try to get myself together

    Find someone to vent to

    Write about it in notepad and get it all off my chest and then go back to work

    And last but not least, no matter what it is I'm going through, the fact of the matter is...
    It could always be worse.

  • The first thing that you need to do is tell someone about it. Someone that will listen. You can bounce ideas off of them and get support from them. Develop a support system, they're very important.

    Exercise is a good thing. Get a punching bad, if you have to. Yoga and meditation are other ways.

    A lot of times you need to slow your mind down and slow your life down. A person that is stressed is taking on too many negative thoughts and not enough positive thoughts. Find a way to take on more positive thoughts than negative thoughts.

    • Unplugging and curling up with a book helps me to destress. I do lots of "work" reading, but reading just for enjoyment is a nice getaway for me.

      When I want to be pampered, I get a massage.
    • For me, I like to exercise in my garage on my elliptical machine or any other form of exercise such as biking or a nice walk. (In the summer though, these things are done in the early morning hours due to the fact I live in sunny and hot Arizona!) The hot tub in the back yard is also a very good stress reliever....yes, even in the summer!

      Other things that I like to do to relieve stress is remind myself how fortunate I am compared to others who have far less than I do. I also like to go online and educate myself about other methods of online marketing. That always seems to work for me.

  • Exercise !!!
    A NASA study revealed that people who exercise work at near-100% efficiency during the last two hours of the day, while those who do not work-out become 50%-less productive in the final two-hours !
    Plus, exercise is hugely effective at alleviating stress and, done about 3 to 6 hours before sleep , can allow you to sleep better too.
  • I destress by watching comedies like The Office and Whose Line.. or going out for a cup of coffee with some good friends always helps as well..
  • Watching comedies is the best medicine for stress, watch comedies when ever you are free, Try it yourself.
  • I usually go for a walk but most of the time I prefer running. It is my way of venting out all there is that bothers me. I could also benefit from it physically.

  • Swimming underwater is great. It also builds neural brain networks - opens up dormant brain networks but you have to hold your breath under water.

    Ive been building up my lung capacity but I can never seem to stay under water I always end up floating before 30seconds is up.

    I like to feel like Lara croft under water pushing myself till I cant take no more!

    Meditation is great! I like to listen to some very strong brain calming frequencies by Dr Jeffrey Thompson and Tom Kenyon.

    Last but not least if its a very stressful day - just break the pattern just get on the bus and see where it takes me usually to my favorite chill out place with a magazine and a brew.

    • When ever i am in stress, i try to listen a good music.
      Its really worthful to watch interesting movie.
      I like to eat food and to do some amazing things in stress.
  • Just try to exercise, get some feel good endorphins produced in my body....
    or i try to re programme my mind so that it views the good side of bad things

      It gives me positive feelings.
  • I've been going through big ups and downs the past few weeks myself. Here's how I've been de-stressing (in no particular order):

    - Massages/spa time
    - Bubble baths
    - Going to the bookstore and reading
    - Listening to hypnosis CDs (also going to a practitioner for something related)
    - Working out
    - Meditation
    - Taking my laptop and working in public places, just being near people
    - Calling friends

    • On a regular basis I practise yoga and qigong. It takes discipline but it's very effective. Talking with friends,listening to music, or sometimes walking on the shore.

  • Meditation is good and golf is great as well.

    Or I take a walk with my dog along trails in the woods. Very de-stressing unless you get tics jumping on you!

  • Sex, drugs, alcohol, meditation, entertainment, etc. - works short term. All things that focus on yourself and self-gratification (and I've been there and still am from time to time).

    Want a long term strategy? Do something for someone less fortunate - missionary work, help out a neighbor, visit people in a nursing home, volunteer at the homeless shelter...

    Nothing better to realign your perspective and really help you re-focus. It really is amazing what you can learn about yourself and others in these situations and actually use it to build yourself personally and eventually your business. Or just settle for a more centered life.
  • I am a massage therapist and when I am really stressed I call one of my massage therapist friends and do a massage exchange.
  • I destress by doing something I enjoy. It's usually a physical activity such as biking, or criving my car crsing down the streets. It's usually the fresh air that realy helps me relieve the stress.

    • I find going to the gym, playing guitar or listening to chilled out music is usually a good way to go. You can do yourself a lot of harm if you let stress hang about on a regular basis.
  • I've learned to recognize the physical symptoms of stress (faster heart rate, shorter breaths, tension in shoulders). I try to, starting with the breathing to focus on each one and correct it. Breathing slowly and deeply guides the entire process.
  • I make something. Collage, cross-stitch, painting, sometimes other stuff. Something than involves using my hands to create something physical. Sometimes it's just writing my worries out by hand, though with a nice pen and a tactilely satisfying book.
  • A movie usually clears my mind .. it's better in a cinema as there is no temptation to switch my laptop on.

    Also I find I relax in the bath and in the bath is where I get my most inspiration .. probably because I am relaxed and it is quiet .. no TV in the bathroom
  • for me it's Martial Art. I taken up krav maga about 6 weeks ago. Prior to that I did a year of kickboxing. I train a minimum of 2 hour a week. Nothing better than punching and kicking a bag to relax you, followed by a trip to the pub to totally relax you!
  • Meditation is a way to overcome emotional and mental strain. Meditation helps us withdraw our attention from the outer world and focus it at a point between and behind our eyebrows, thereby stimulating what is called the 'third eye'. By focusing our attention on it, we can reach higher levels of consciousness.

  • The Best way to destress is by Offering Prayer to ALLAH *( Creator and Only LORD Of All Of US)* ... Life is full of stress if you not live in obedience of your Creator < ALLAH The One & Only GOD>

  • I would let everything go off my mind and would just go to sleep or do anything that doesn't recall my memory about those stressful moments. Listening to music also helps.

    • There are days that I just need
      a glass of wine and some jazz.

      There are other days where a
      good workout does the trick.

      Sometimes I just have to cry
      it out.

      I listen to my body to see what
      I need and then I do just that.
  • Music. I love music, and a good song can change your mood. I love to sing along as well.

    Gardening. I may sound like an old man here but I love pottering around in the garden. It fun to watch things grow and to cultivate them. Mind you the dead brown snake across the road on saturday was not that relaxing. I may have to wear shows from now on.

    Movies. I enjoy watching movies. I am a Sci-Fi geek, but a good comedy is always more relaxing.

    A quite drink Friday afternoon with friends. 2 or 3 drinks, a chat, and a chance to unwind is always good.

    Sleeping in. I find the best way to relax is to sleep in a say stuff it to everything else that needs to be done.

    No work on Saturdays and Sundays. I have learnt that to really relax I need to say no to work on weekends. This business can be done between Monday and Friday. There is no need to work on the weekends. If I do do any work, then its just checking emails or playing around with twitter, other than that I relax.
  • If I am feeling hurt about something I watch TV or play computer games, because it offers some sort of distraction from the immediate situation. I use TV to unwind at the end of the day. But screens that emit light have a stimulating effect on the brain and are not good for relaxing, de-stressing or learning.

    Exercise has been proven to deal with stress, negative emotions and depression. When you exercise your body produces endorphins (brain hormones) which deal with these negative emotions. If I can get out for a walk it always helps.
  • I go dinghy racing. If your mind wanders back to work you get wet and cold!
  • Exercise totally does it for me. A long, hard run or weight training session pushing it to the limit. Also I try to stay away from anything that isn't positive like dramas on TV. If I watch TV it's usually a comedy.

  • I watch TV and eat something. That is about it.

    Maybe play some video games.
